Northwest Missouri gets meager slice of arts pie
by St. Joseph News-Press
Tuesday, August 5, 2008

Northwest Missouri art agencies took in less than 3.35 percent of the $6.6 million awarded to nonprofit organizations statewide, Gov. Matt Blunt’s office announced Monday.

Mr. Blunt honored the city of St. Joseph with the Missouri Arts Council’s Creative Community award earlier this year.

The Missouri Arts Council will distribute the funds, of which $220,830 will go to artistic efforts in Northwest Missouri — with $174,567 coming to St. Joseph.

The 272 grant applicants from across the state received an average of 86 percent of the funds requested, according to Mr. Blunt’s office.

Grants ranged in size from $2,000 for a folk festival in Clarksville, Mo., to $267,900 for Kansas City’s Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art.

St. Joseph recipients were:

Albrecht-Kemper Museum of Art, $25,009.

Allied Arts Council, $30,170.

Creative Arts Productions, $4,847.

Mid-City Excellence Community Learning Center, $27,000.

Missouri Western State University, $9,010 for arts education and $3,701 for music efforts.

Performing Arts Association, $24,840.

Robidoux Resident Theater, $23,800.

St. Joseph Symphony Society, $26,190.

Regional recipients included the Chillicothe Fine Arts Council, which captured $18,080. The state awarded $13,671 to Northwest Missouri State University for its DeLuce Gallery, $10,792 to the State Theater Arts Council in Mound City and $3,720 to the Grundy County Friends of the Arts in Trenton.
