Kansas teen injured in head-on collision
by St. Joseph News-Press
Friday, August 22, 2008

A Kansas teenager suffered serious injuries in a head-on collision Thursday afternoon while trying to pass another vehicle on U.S. Highway 59.

Morgan Lister, 19, of Atchison, Kan., was airlifted to Heartland Regional Medical Center shortly after the 5:30 p.m. wreck just outside Rushville, Mo. She was listed in fair condition late Thursday.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol said Ms. Lister was northbound on Highway 59 when her 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt collided head-on with a 2006 Dodge Stratus.

The driver of the Dodge, Amy Pedraza, 32, of McLouth, Kan., suffered moderate injuries and was transported to Atchison Hospital. A nursing supervisor there would not release her condition.

Ms. Lister was cited by the patrol for improper passing. The Buchanan County Sheriff’s Department assisted with traffic control.

Note to anyone who drives on Highway 59 -- be *careful* when you pass! The number of accidents that occur on this highway (most of which seem to be caused by improper passing) is astounding. It has taken far too many lives.

The way I see it, it's better to follow the slow guy for 20 miles (and lose only about 3.5 minutes) than to risk your life (and that of others) to get around him. Time is precious, but life is more so!

Be safe, everyone!
