Residents in Skidmore, Mo., and the surrounding area are preparing for the annual Freedom Fest that celebrates the service of military veterans and American patriotism in general.
This year’s events are scheduled for Sept. 5 to 7, on the grounds of Skidmore Wildcat Park.
Freedom Fest began in 1988 as a way for a World War II-era father to express a heartfelt welcome to his Vietnam War veteran son. An independent nonprofit committee has been the sponsor since 1993.
Admission is free.
The first day of the festival features living history displays and student visits with veterans. A patriotic/military dog show will be held for the first time, followed in the evening by a “strut your stuff” parade.
An adults’ and children’s motorcycle show will be held the second day. Active duty personnel will be recognized, and veterans from past wars will speak. The Freedom Fest Jam Band will perform in the evening.
Freedom Fest concludes with a Sunday all-faith church service.

Mobile van
to serve veterans
The Disabled American Veterans will have a fully equipped mobile national service officer van at the Gentry County Courthouse on Sept. 8.
The van will be stationed at the courthouse in Albany, Mo., from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Veterans wishing to apply for aid are asked to bring copies of their military discharge, Social Security number, Veterans Administration claim number (if applicable), and other documents.
The van is staffed by service officers familiar with all veterans and family benefits issues.
A veteran does not need to be a member of DAV or any other veterans’ organization to receive assistance in applying for benefits.
