Two charged in shooting incidents

MAYSVILLE, Mo. — Million-dollar bonds kept two men in the custody of the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Department after they were charged as suspects in a series of shooting cases.

“They are accused of drive-by shootings at innocent drivers on a rural highway, and if that’s not the definition of being a danger to the community, I don’t know what is,” said Bart Spears, the DeKalb County prosecutor. “We’re lucky no one was hurt.”

DeKalb County Associate Circuit Judge R. Brent Elliott arraigned the two men from Albany, Mo., on felony charges at 9 a.m. Thursday. Blake K. Siddens, 19, faces felony charges of tampering with a vehicle, receiving stolen property and three counts of discharging a firearm from a motor vehicle. Nathaniel L. Raines, 19, faces felony charges of tampering with a vehicle and receiving stolen property and three counts of aiding or abetting a person with discharging a firearm from a motor vehicle.

On Nov. 26, the two suspects allegedly fired shots that struck two vehicles and fired at three other vehicles while traveling on Missouri Highway 31 in DeKalb County.

The DeKalb County Sheriff’s Department was the lead investigating unit with support from the Andrew County, Buchanan County and Gentry County Sheriff’s departments, the St. Joseph Police Department and officers from the criminal interdiction team of the Missouri State Highway Patrol.

“I just had a gut feeling,” said Wes Raines, DeKalb County sheriff. The suspect is a distant cousin of the sheriff.

Mr. Raines, the suspect, was taken into custody at 2:08 a.m. Wednesday and Mr. Siddens was arrested at 8 a.m. Wednesday.

A .45-caliber weapon, several stolen vehicles and other evidence recovered in the investigation led officers to investigate whether other crimes may be related, the sheriff said.

Mr. Spears reviewed the cases and filed charges late Wednesday.

Also, the Gentry County prosecutor charged Mr. Raines and Mr. Siddens each with three felony charges of unlawful use of a weapon on Thursday. The two men allegedly fired bullets from a .45-caliber weapon into three homes in Ford City while driving through the community on Nov. 25.

In addition to their $1 million bonds in DeKalb County, Associate Circuit Court Judge Edward Manring set bond for Mr. Raines at $1 million and Mr. Siddens at $100,000 cash only. No arraignment date has been set for either case.

The two suspects are being held in the Daviess-DeKalb Regional Jail in Pattonsburg, Mo. The two will return to Maysville for a court appearance at 9 a.m. Dec. 17.

Mr. Raines and Mr. Siddens are the prime suspects in the thefts of two vehicles on Saturday and two on Sunday in Andrew County, said Gary Howard, the sheriff. Two of those vehicles were burned and two were wrecked, Mr. Howard said. No charges had been filed Thursday in Andrew County.

The investigation is ongoing and additional charges are anticipated.
