A retired engineer who worked for the Burlington Railroad for 42 years, Delbert Weese, a 75-year-old self-taught artist from Edgerton, Mo., has seen much of the country — and parts that most people haven’t. “You see things that other people will never see,” Weese says. “You’re out there in the wilderness.” And it’s the artifacts and architecture that lie off the beaten path that Weese tries to capture, painting realistic oil paintings on laminate surfaces. It may be his age or his past profession, but he prefers to capture subjects that are anything but modern. “My big thing is I like old buildings. Anything that’s about to run down ... that’s the kind of stuff I like to paint,” Weese says. Delbert Weese’s work is on display at the St. Joseph City Hall, 1100 Frederick Ave., through March 10.
