Thursday, July 3, 2008

Strong storms passed through Northwest Missouri Wednesday night, including a tornado that touched down in Holt County.

The Holt County Sheriff’s Department confirmed a tornado touched down at 8:25 p.m. The Holt County dispatcher said the department didn’t receive any reports of damage to structures. The storm did knock down some trees and power lines.

Power lines also were knocked down in Clinton County near Gower, Mo., a Clinton County Sheriff’s Department official reported late Wednesday.

The Livingston County Sheriff’s Department reported quarter-sized hail that damaged some vehicles. The Chillicothe Police Department reported marble-sized hail.

The city of St. Joseph was under a tornado warning for a short period.

St. Joseph emergency officials witnessed rotation in the clouds nearing St. Joseph and a wall cloud. No serious damage was reported.

Being in town for the holiday weekend I am amazed that the county can put out a tornado warning just because some uneducated person calls and says that they saw some spin in the clouds. Isn't NOAA the government oversight for the weather services for each county. Why didn't NOAA put out the warning like they do for everywhere else in the country? If you check all the NOAA records for yesterday there are 0 reports of tornadoes in the St Joseph vicinity.

This kind of activity is scaring our children. I have seen so many kids that are scared to death of storms because of how things are taken so far out of proportion. Have you ever heard of the boy that cried wolf. Constantly putting this county in a tornado warning with no tornadoes in the area only makes people more reluctant to take shelter. So when there is really a tornado that NOAA puts a warning out for then people are going to die because they think it is once again the county over-reacting to a report from an uneducated storm spotter.

So what happens in this county if another uneducated person sees a plane fly overhead and they call the authorities and report that the plane is foreign and carrying a nuclear weapon? Do you set off the alarms and report that everyone go immediately to there fall out shelters?
