Police respond to weapons fight
by Marshall White
Tuesday, July 29, 2008

Police officers responded to a 911 call Monday night when a fight involving weapons broke out on Doniphan Street.

St. Joseph Police Department officers arrived on the scene at about 10:30 p.m. Monday with guns drawn and took four individuals into custody for questioning in the vicinity of 2409 Doniphan St.

It seems one individual lives with a pregnant woman but he’s not the father, Cmdr. Jim Connors said Tuesday. The alleged father arrived with his brother at the house and they brought baseball bats, Mr. Connors said. The man who lives on Doniphan had a pistol in his waistband and words were exchanged, he said. A punch may have been thrown and then weapons were grabbed, Mr. Connors said.

“A weapon was recovered at the scene but its unknown if it was used in a threatening manner at this time,”

said Steve Smith, an officer investigating the incident.

Tuesday, Mr. Connors said, it appears the man carrying the gun waved it, suggesting that ball bats weren’t appropriate. All parties agreed to de-escalate by voluntarily putting the weapons down, he said. A few punches were thrown before police arrived, Mr. Connors said.

Three individuals were released at the scene and one man was taken to the Buchanan County Jail for further questioning. The investigation is ongoing Tuesday but no charges had been filed. No one was injured.
