Andrew County races heating up
by Marshall White
Thursday, July 31, 2008

SAVANNAH, Mo. — On Tuesday, Andrew County voters will choose one of three party races for the Eastern and Western District commissioners. The winners will then square off in November’s general election.

Incumbent Greg Wall and newcomer Tony Hill are vying to become the Democratic nominee in the Eastern District commissioner’s race. Mr. Wall, 56, has served as a commissioner for more than seven years.

“I strived to make sure the county budget balanced each year and that there would be a cash reserve,” Mr. Wall said. The commission saved money to build a new county barn and upgrade all the county’s road equipment without requesting additional money from the voters, he said.

The challenger, Mr. Hill, 35, says he wants to focus on county roads. “I believe the majority of the county roads are in poor shape,” Mr. Hill said, adding that the commission needs to do more road work.

Democrats and Republicans want to replace Richard “Dick” Townsend, who is not seeking re-election as the Western District Commissioner.

The Republican race pits four candidates, Wayne Duncan, 50, Darin Sloan, 45, Richard Knorr, 46, and Larry Carr, 61, against one another.

Mr. Duncan, owner of Duncan Carriage and Duncan Tool Sales, said he’s always been interested in his home county. “I want to be able to help to develop more jobs for Andrew County while protecting and promoting rural agriculture as we face urban sprawl,” he said.

Mr. Sloan simply feels it’s time for him to seek public office and says he wants to attract more jobs. “If you live in Andrew County you should be able to work in Andrew County,” he said.

Mr. Knorr, a farmer, is seeking public office for the first time. He said he wants to take care of taxpayer money by balancing the budget while maintaining county roads. “I have an interest in roads, what with two driving-age daughters,” he said.

Mr. Carr, who works with his wife at the NAPA Auto Parts store he opened 20 years ago, has served nine years on the North Andrew school board and has been active in Republican politics. If elected, he said he’d seek to continue to improve all of the county’s 550 gravel and 60 dirt roads. A simple improvement would be to cut back more trees that hang over dirt roads so the sun can dry them out, he said.

Two Democrats, Brad Grieme, 36, and Darryl Howard want to be their party’s nominee for the Western District.

Mr. Grieme, the owner of Back Electric, said he’s fascinated with county government and would bring a young and energetic voice to a county that’s growing and changing. An active supporter of several youth organizations, Mr. Grieme said, “I’d continue to make Andrew County a great place to raise a family.”

Mr. Howard, a maintenance man and equipment operator for the county, couldn’t be reached for comment this week.

Voting is getting easier all the time.

Whenever my phone rings, and it is a pre-recorded message from a politician, they get crossed off my list.

Not much is more irritating or impersonal......
