Lightning lights the sky Thursday night on northbound Interstate 29. A double-trailer truck was turned on its side by strong winds. Two other tractor-trailers also were knocked over by the winds on I-29 near Craig, Mo.
Multiple tornadoes were reported in Northwest Missouri and Northeast Kansas Thursday night and one town was evacuated because of rising flood waters.
Severe wind and rain hit St. Joseph just after 10 p.m. and a tornado warning was issued.
St. Joe Now reported a rotating wall cloud near Elwood, Kan. Another wall cloud was reported to the National Weather Service near Interstate 29 and Business 71. There were no reports of significant damage late Thursday.
Power was reported to be out after 10:45 p.m. south of U.S. Highway 36 in St. Joseph. Power outages also were spotted in Craig, Mo.
Earlier in the night, storm spotters reported multiple tornadoes six miles east of Rock Port, Mo., said Julie Adolphson, meteorologist-in-charge with the National Weather Service office in Pleasant Hill, Mo.
An emergency manager reported a large tornado crossed the Missouri River in Holt County around 8 p.m., Ms. Adolphson said.
The storm caused two tractor-trailers to be blown over near the 96 mile marker of Interstate 29 at Craig in Holt County.
“One of the drivers needed to be extricated,” Ms. Adolphson said.
Another tractor-trailer was blown over near the 92 mile marker.
Injury information wasn’t available late Thursday.
Power lines were down across U.S. Highway 59 south of Fairfax, Mo., in Atchison County. Farm structures were destroyed three miles south of Fairfax, Ms. Adolphson said.
One-inch hail was reported at Langdon, Mo., in Atchison County. The Nodaway River at Clearmont flooded onto U.S. Highway 71, flooding the highway into Iowa. Flooding also inundated Missouri Route C between Clearmont and Elmo in Nodaway County, Ms. Adolphson added.
Andrew County Emergency Management Director Roger Latham said the county was closing County Road 459 Thursday night. Officials were asking Nodaway, Mo., residents to evacuate immediately because of rising waters on the Missouri River.
“It’s moved pretty fast (the water level),” said a dispatcher in Andrew County.
Another round of storms was possible for Northwest Missouri later in the night, she said. Heavy rain could bring added flooding.
Brown County Sheriff John Merchant said a tornado was reported in Morrill, Kan., but with no damage. A small tornado struck Reserve and tore off a front porch, ripped down power lines and tree limbs. Garages, storage buildings, stock trailers, and fifth-wheel trailers were all damaged, Mr. Merchant said.
No injuries were reported in Brown County.
A dispatcher with the Richardson County Sheriff’s Department in Nebraska reported downed power lines and damaged houses in the rural Falls City area.
