MO River still flirting with flood stage

Monday, June 9, 2008

City and county officials continued to eye the Missouri River Monday for the threat of residential flooding.

The Missouri River crested at 24.53 feet Sunday — roughly 7.5 feet above flood stage.

As of 9 a.m. Monday, the river stage was roughly similar at 24.4 feet, according to a morning news release from Mary Robertson, St. Joseph communications manager.

City officials anticipate the river will crest to 26 feet at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

“City crews will continue sandbagging operations today to have a supply ready in the event it becomes necessary to utilize,” Ms. Robertson stated. “The river, and weather, will continue to be closely monitored. Preparations are in place should the river state rise to a level that would dictate additional action.”

The National Weather Service early Monday extended flood warnings for the Missouri River in St. Joseph and Atchison, Kan. Flood warnings also are in effect for the Grand River near Chillicothe, Mo., the Platte River near Agency, Mo., and the Platte River near Platte City.

The National Weather Service doesn’t predict precipitation until Thursday, with a 40 percent chance of thunderstorms.

Winthrop, Mo., officials have requested roughly 100 sandbags to help with flooding there, but water hasn’t affected any structures in Buchanan County, said Bill Brinton, the county’s emergency manager.
