FALLS CITY, Neb. — Officials continued an investigation Monday into the death of a University of Nebraska-Omaha graduate who recently took a job as a music teacher with the local school district.
April M. Bishop, 21, was found dead over the weekend in Falls City, according to Richardson County Attorney Douglas Merz. She had moved to Richardson County in the past month, Mr. Merz said.
He did not elaborate on the investigation.
Falls City Superintendent Dr. Jon Habben said Ms. Bishop was to start teaching instrumental music students in the system’s junior and senior high grades in the new academic year.
“She was just contracted in April,” Dr. Habben said. Ms. Bishop hailed from Plattsmouth, Neb., he added.
At this time, the case is being investigated as an unattended death. The Nebraska State Patrol has not been asked to assist with the case, said spokesman Mike Meyer. It may be several days before autopsy results are known, Dr. Habben said.
Dr. Melissa Berke, chairwoman of the university’s music department, praised her enthusiasm and breadth of campus activities.
“I wish I had carbon copies of April Bishop,” she said. “I think she loved the challenge of learning new music.”
Ms. Bishop had graduated summa cum laude on May 9, was a member of the university’s Marching Mavericks and belonged to the honorary band fraternity Kappa Kappa Si, Dr. Berke said.
She often spoke about her desire for a career of teaching music in a small community, out of an interest to give back to her small-town upbringing. Her readiness to begin the job influenced the move to Falls City.
“She was so excited about this job,” Dr. Berke said.
She preferred to work among groups. An entry on her Facebook page includes a quote about her ambition.
“Someday, I’m going to be teaching in a community and I’m going to take that group and love it and pet it and call it my band,” she said.
Regarded as a student leader, she enjoyed welcoming new students to the UNO campus.
“She was such a friend to everybody,” Dr. Berke said. “She took time to get to know everybody.”
Dr. Berke said she did not know of any health issues.

For such a small town, Falls City sure seems to get its fill of drama. i.e.,Michael Ryan, Teena Brandon, Nick Koso, Ann Marx, just to name a few, now, this. My heart goes out to the family of this young lady, there's nothing natural about such a young life ending so soon.
