On average, a burglar will only spend 60 to 90 seconds entering a home. Improperly secured doors and windows are the burglars’ easiest routes to their prize.
The St. Joseph Police Department offers its services and knowledge in helping secure residences and businesses. The problem is, most people don’t take advantage of all they have to offer.
Sgt. Greg Gilpin and Sgt. Richard Eaton head up a program and put together an informational packet that helps individuals secure their home, business and belongings. The program has been around about five years, Mr. Gilpin said.
However, he has a hard time remembering the last building he checked.
“A lot of it is stuff people know, they just don’t do,” Mr. Gilpin said.
After an individual contacts the Police Department and schedules an appointment, either Mr. Gilpin or Mr. Eaton will spend anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour going through the checklist they created with the owner of the property.
Things on the list include: properly trimmed bushes in the yard, outdoor lighting, locks on the doors, alarm systems, windows, interior items and pets.
According to their brochure, bushes should be no more than 2 feet high and tree branches should be at least 6 feet off the ground. Windows should have locks that allow a window that is partially open to be locked. Extra security should also be considered when residents own guns and jewelry.
Mr. Gilpin encourages individuals to either set up an appointment to have their home checked or to stop by the Law Enforcement Center and pick up a copy of the checklist to do themselves.
“It’s one of those better safe than sorry things,” Mr. Gilpin said.
