There’s more than one show in town this weekend.
Native American artifacts from a four-state area will be on display from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Remington Nature Center of St. Joseph.
Mike George, an amateur archaeologist from Oregon, Mo., organized the event that will bring more than 20 exhibitors and more than 12,000 artifacts together in St. Joseph. Mr. George has already loaned part of his collection for display at the Nature Center. He will bring another five tables worth of artifacts, including a video showing the excavation of a caché of 30 blades.
Other exhibitors will bring Indian clothing, ancient animal bones, arrowheads, spear points and other tools dating as far back as the Clovis era. Mr. George said the clothing should be a popular exhibit, as it is more rare than the arrowheads and related items that many people find on their own.
Guests can even enjoy some of the artifacts hands-on.
“You can touch a 30,000-year-old bone out of an ice age animal if you haven’t done that before,” Mr. George said.
Collectors from Missouri, Kansas, Iowa and Nebraska will participate.
The artifacts will be displayed in the Nature Center’s conference rooms. All regular exhibits will remain open.
The Nature Center’s standard admission rates — $3 for adults, $2 for seniors, $1 for age 7-15, 6 and under free — will apply for Saturday’s show. Concessions will be available.
