Man dies in head-on accident
by St. Joseph News-Press
Thursday, August 27, 2009

A 46-year-old man was killed in a head-on traffic accident Wednesday evening, seven miles outside Burlington Junction, Mo.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol said Lyle Shipley of Burlington Junction was traveling north on Apollo Trail shortly before 6 p.m. when his 1990 Toyota Camry crashed head-on with a 2001 Dodge Ram pickup driven by Tyler Fast, 24, of Burlington Junction, who was traveling south.

Mr. Shipley’s vehicle came to rest on its wheels, while Mr. Fast’s truck flipped before coming to rest on its top.

Neither driver was wearing a safety belt. Mr. Shipley was pronounced dead at the scene. Mr. Fast was unharmed, but a passenger, Jared Strough, 23, of Skidmore, Mo., sustained minor injuries and was taken to St. Francis Hospital in Maryville, Mo.

This was the sixth fatality in August in the patrol’s Troop H, which covers Northwest Missouri.
