Trying to help
I see by this morning’s paper that you have pretty well done away with the TV listings. All I can get is what’s going to be on after 6 o’clock tonight. What are you going to do away with next? How about the obituary page, Dear Abby, maybe the funnies? Why not throw out sports altogether? I don’t read the sports page anyway. Just thought I would offer an opinion here.
Not happy
I am calling about your TV guide section. It’s no longer in Saturday’s paper. A lot of people, especially older people, do not have a computer. It is kind of hard for older people, you can’t afford to buy a TV Guide at the store. I think it should be put back in the paper.
For it, sort of
I’m not against the new training facility at Missouri Western. In fact, I’m for it if we can afford it. But has anybody figured out who is going to pay the $6,000 to $8,000 a month utility bill and keep the maintenance on it? Are the Chiefs going to do anything about paying that? I’m just worried about how much money the city is spending right now and how far in debt we’re getting.
No deal
I am getting tired of these stores advertising these big sales, “Come in and get them while you can!”. And you get 10 or 15, maybe even 20 percent off. That’s not big savings. The best way to save money is not to go buying any of their garbage until they can go 50 to 60 percent off. The markup is terrific, whether it’s clothing, groceries, auto parts, books or anything. When they are giving you 10 to 15 percent off, that is no savings.
Experienced
With all the recent turmoil going on in the Middle East, it’s comforting to know that our new secretary of state has experience landing under fire.
Big old thing
Whatever happened to that big old black thing? I think it was a grain silo between Elwood and Wathena. It was parallel to the railroad tracks. It was there for years, and now, all of a sudden, it’s gone. Is there anyone who knows the name of it?
Sick and sad
I am sick and sad as I sit here and read the newspaper, where they say we can come up with money to help a losing Kansas City football team come to St. Joe for training camp. But we cannot come up with money to help our poor student population get out of a 100-year-old elementary building and help the school district build new buildings. As a parent and a community member, that not only hurts my heart, but it makes me sick and sad.
to sick and sad. i am a former electrician. i have been in every school in town at one point or another. the buildings that dr smith is proposing closing are by far some o fthe most sturdy structures i have had the privilege to work in. they are cast re-inforced concrete. i tell ya, if there were a tornado coming to town, that is where i'd want to be. these buildings may be old, but they are far from falling apart.
JAFO you are right. the buildings aren't the problem, the quality of education is. when you don't have enough books for everychild in every class room to take home and study, then what good is a new school going to do? crowd more students into the already overflowing classes? bus kids from the southend to the school at the northend? or even midtown?
I fear NPG is falling into the classic trap of companies in "mature" industries. In order to maintain margins, they cut back on service effectively trying to sell less for more. Sadly, it is a downward spiral destined to fail. The real challenge is to find content that will make buying the paper and keeping it around for a week or so relevant again.
Gas prices have remained steady at $1.65 for over a week now based upon the surge in oil prices from over two weeks ago to just over $50 per barrel. Now oil has dropped and has remained under $39 a barrel for over a week and gas prices remain stuck. Oil goes up, gas prices rise very quickly, .10 cents in a day in some cases, but when oil drops, gas prices remain stalled. Gas prices in other parts of Missouri have been reported as low as $1.47. If stations and owners are going to base their prices on the cost of oil, then the prices at the pump should reflect the current price, not artifically inflated to gain more profit
I think most if not all cable and satellite providers offer a guide right on your TV screen. Not much need for TV listings in the paper.
Well there you be Ninja! I agree with you about the Chiefs, this will bring ALOT of money into town...this is a positive thing. Can't wait until they are here!
If you cut through all of the B.S. you will fing out that a study of the local economy and what income the Chiefs training camp will bring to St. Joe it's a no brainer. The bottom line is several million over the years for St. Joe. These income estimates aren't compiled by the federal government so you can be sure that they are fairly accurate.
With my cable package, by the time the on-screen guide scrolls through, the show you wanted to see is pretty much over. The online guide is better but I feel for those who don't have access to that resource.
I think that the Chiefs training camp and new, modern schools will be very positive additions to St. Joe. I'm excited.
