Evening in America
This is in regard to “Still thinking” in Wednesday’s “It’s your call.” My stomach is still hurting from the laughing I got from your little call-in about Ronald Reagan being a great president. Let’s start from the beginning: bad governor, worse president. This man did not bring the country together. He split us right down the middle and that’s where it all started — his massive, out-of-control spending with Star Wars and other projects such as that. This country still hasn’t recovered from the mess that Ronald Reagan put us into.
Enforcement
I’ve said it before, and now again. I think everyone is entitled to the fireworks all they want. But the law should be to stand at the edge of their property and shoot it — not sit in their yards and shoot them at our homes. Enforcing the laws on fireworks here in St. Joe is a joke. Do the police see and arrest those guilty? No way.
Timing is everything
Well, well, well. Green zones and saving money with grants from the federal government. The city wants to save money and save energy by changing the stoplights with LEDs. Why don’t you synchronize the lights on the Belt Highway so you can drive from the Andrew County line to Pear Street without stopping? Coordinate the lights so people can get out of the way and only have to stop once from one end of the town to the other. You’ll save significant money and energy in gas.
Don’t ask
I have no problem with people’s opinions, but the one who says hail to the chief about Clinton. Yeah, maybe what he did was wrong. But to say that Hillary knew it and the Democratic Party knew it is hooey.
In the dark
How come I have to pay a transit fee on my light bill? They’re not associated with the transportation anymore?
Finale
Anybody who dislikes the fireworks due to the people shooting them off since the 20th and generally waiting until everyone is in bed before they start blowing up garbage cans, call your legislature or your state senator and tell them to get the ban back like it used to be in the ’50s and ’60s where you couldn’t sell the fireworks until maybe a week before the Fourth. But this junk of having these fireworks shot off under your windows and over your houses because you’ve got to get up and go to work is ridiculous.
Editor’s note: Fireworks sales in Missouri are allowed to in-state residents starting on June 20.

With possibly thousands of people shooting fireworks illegally throughout the city, how can we expect the police to enforce this with approx. 9 officers on patrol? I guess we could ask them to put the assault, robbery, etc calls on hold while they take care of fireworks complaints.
Really!! You think Ronald Reagan was a terrible President because of...how'd you put it...." his massive, out-of-control spending with Star Wars and other projects such as that."
So....just wondering...what do you think of our CURRENT President and his his massive, out-of-control spending with AIG, banking industry, Chrysler, GM, healthcare, cap and trade, and other projects such as that?
While the bailouts may have STARTED before President Bush left office, the bailouts belong TOTALLY to President Obama.
The REASON we haven't had more attacks is BECAUSE of our increased security measures...and thanks, largely, to our military personnel. Our economic meltdown is due almost negligibly to increased security measures, and almost TOTALLY to a lack of integrity and fiscal responsibility in the insurance industry, banking industry, auto manufacturing, etc, etc.
Pops & Friends - Evening in America is spot on about Reagan splitting us down the middle. That fracture widens every day with equal intolerance and ugliness on the right and on the left.
darkhorse is completely right
It is summertime. The idiots are out in St. Joe.. Which means more bar fights, domestic assaults, kids out vandalizing property, WAY more aggressive crimes. Every night is nuts for the police officers. How can they possibly go and catch all of the people shooting off fireworks? Oh sure, they can go and try, but don't be complaining when someone breaks into your house and no one gets there quick because they are scolding some 12 year old about the use of fireworks within city limits.
Think about what deserves more priority--- fireworks that aren't hurting anything but your ears, or a woman getting beat in the street by her boyfriend.
Trixie,
I'm glad you mentioned the left, when you were talking about the ugliness. While many people understand that such behavior seems to come from both sides, some believe it's only from the right. To be fair, some on the right only believe the LEFT is being ugly. Wouldn't it be great if people could see that ugliness and intolerance exists on both sides, and take steps to stop it??!!
Reagan could have done a 3rd term if allowed. To blame him for anything after all these years is pretty stupid. I lived through the Reagan years and it was great. Everyone had a job and the country was always moving forward. you want to point to someone , point to your buddy Clinton...is the Lee company building still empty? They left as soon as Bill sold us out to Mexico with NAFTA.
The only people that split off because of Ronald Reagan were the union people and other welfare rats that have the entitlement mentality. He simply wanted those able to, to contribute to society.
Ronald Reagan will go down in history as one of America's greatest presidents. He slashed Jimmy Carter's obscene income tax rates, cut down double-digit inflation, slashed interest rates and launched one of our greatest economic prosperity times ever. More than that, though, he was a proponent of freedom and individual responsibility. "Government isn't the answer," he said. "It's the problem." How so very true. "Never give a big spender a bigger allowance." His steadfast belief in the time-honored traditions of the American spirit was an inspiration to many including me. He is sorely missed. If here were alive today, I can't imagine the disgust he would be feeling.
Appol, The president you are speaking of is Ronald Reagan, not Reagon. What is a terriost or a weopon?
Apple...if economics are as leathal as an atomic bomb (and I agree), would you suggest Obama is as leathal as 10 atomic bombs....?
