Dana and Chuck Cook are the new captains at the Salvation Army in St. Joseph.

The Salvation Army has assigned a dynamic couple from Pittsburg, Kan., to maintain and develop programs in St. Joseph.

Captains Chuck and Dana Cook spent their first day on the job Wednesday at the Salvation Army’s community building on Messanie Street, between Sixth and Seventh streets.

“We’re somewhat overwhelmed,” said Mrs. Cook. “But at the same time, we’re pretty excited. St. Joseph is a lot larger than our last two appointments.”

Mr. Cook will be looking at the “big picture” and finances.

“I guess you could say I run a tight ship, so that we can do what we say and keep any promises,” Mr. Cook said. “The Army realizes that these are rough economic times everywhere.”

The shelter is already 10 years old. If the Army is going to be a good steward, then a close eye needs to be focused on the building’s wear and tear, Mr. Cook said.

Mrs. Cook will focus on programming, including Salvation Army strengths such as the shelter programs. She wants to take a close look at the community building that includes offices, a chapel, gym and meeting rooms.

“It’s beautiful, but not being used to its potential,” Mrs. Cook said. “We hope to be able to do some niche partnerships with other community agencies.”

The two captains are looking forward to meeting the community. The local Salvation Army’s advisory board will hold a reception for them from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Salvation Army’s community center.

The Cooks’ youngest daughter, Reana, will join the couple later this week, applying to attend the nursing program at Missouri Western State University.
