Captain D’s closes on Belt
by Ahmad Safi
Tuesday, June 30, 2009

The Captain D’s Seafood franchise ended in St. Joseph with the closing Friday of the restaurant at 2709 N. Belt Highway. The restaurant is expected to reopen under a new brand and new owner.

Reel ‘Em In, LLC., a Kansas City holding company that owns eight Captain D’s in the Kansas City-metro area, sold the St. Joseph restaurant. Franchisee President Brian Studdard said keeping the aging building open would have required a remodel by purchasing Captain D’s new décor, which recreates the allure of a dock-side seafood shack. He received two unsolicited offers for the restaurant in April. Mr. Studdard said the new owners indicated they would open a restaurant at that location.

Reel ‘Em In purchased the company-owned restaurant in 2001. Mr. Studdard said the local market showed a strong and loyal customer base.

“There are certainly some new areas in St. Joe worthy of looking into,” he said. “I wouldn’t rule out us coming back to St. Joe one day.”

City health records once touted Captain D’s as “one of the cleanest fast-food restaurants.”

However, in 2008, the franchise began racking up several critical violations. An inspection last Monday found raw fish being held above temperature in a broken cooler, along with three other critical violations.

Sorry to see it close, we ate there often. Same with Popeyes, their chicken was the best!
p.s. We ordered breadsticks in place of hushpuppies at Captain D's, delicious !

Yeah, when they closed the told all the employees for over a week that they WEREN'T closing, until the last day at which they had told them when they came to work that it was going to be their last day. Maybe if the owner wasn't so cheap and let the building go over the years like he did, then maybe business wouldn't have dropped in half like it did. It is pretty sad though because a lot of people don't reguard fast food as a hard job, but these people do make sacrifices and miss out on a lot of family events and this is what they get for being loyal to the company.
Also they were told time and time again about that remodel and how it was always just a couple of months away. That was only one of the numerous lies that was told to the employees. Maybe if they would have taken the time to remodel, the store would not be sitting empty today.

I will NEVER spend another dollar on anything that has to do with Brian Studdard.

The quality and service at Captain D's was on the decline for a while. The restaurant became very dirty so I quit bringing the family there. I feel bad for the people out of a job. . .

Brian Studdard must be some coward!!!!! What kind of man would close a business and not bother to tell his employees? What a joke!!!! How does he sleep at night? What about all those poor kids that lost their jobs? I'm sure some of those kids had families to support. Now what are they to do? I hope they all draw unemployment off that coward Studdard for a very, very long time. They rightfully deserve every penny they get!!!!!!!!!!!!! Captain D's had great fish! I loved everything but the breadsticks. I sure will miss that restaurant and I hope the employees get over this terrible backstabbing incident soon enough.

Terrible backstabbing?? Please, try not to be so melodramatic over a fast food restaurant.

Do you really think that any business owner would come in and say "Hey folks, we're shutting the doors in 30 days"? What would be the point? People would stop showing up and product/fixtures would magically start disappearing.

These are fast food jobs. No one spent years going to college to earn an advanced degree for this. I doubt anyone was supporting a "family" these wages.

According to most, the food and service has been in decline at this location for quite some time. Is that the fault of the owner? To a certain degree absolutely. But did he cook the food, serve the guests, or clean the place? No he didn't. The people who were "backstabbed" did.

Don't worry, McDonald's and Taco Bell are both hiring, so problem solved..

seriously, rjw, there are Many parents who both work two jobs to keep their families going. i know several couples who work a shift at a manufacturing job, catch a couple of hours sleep, get the children off to school and head to their second job, often at a fast food place. consider the college student who is helping to pay his way through school, the older person who is finding themselves having to return to work...... or just "consider".

or perhaps you would prefer that these people just go on welfare?

Agreed heritage, there is absolutely nothing wrong with a fast food job. However, these people losing their jobs, while sad, is not the tragedy some of the earlier posters try to represent. I feel pretty confident that no one at Captain D's lost their pension, medical insurance, or stock equity.

Most of the fast food places in the vicinty have "Now Hiring" signs. If any of the former employees don't have a similar paying job by now, its more than likely their fault.

I don't want to see anyone on welfare, but I would like to see the return of the McRib....

I am sure these were not high paying jobs, staff did not lose benefits etc, thats important but also others things were just as important...all of that aside..what happened to these employees having the common courtesy of being told in advance what was going on and been given some respect??...what happened to the saying do unto others??..what happened to treat others the way we want to be treated??..you know if more of you lived by that rule, this city, this country would not be in thr troubles it is in now and the children in this country would not be such a mess...its a disagrace the way some people treat others and people in this city have proved that time and time again

"RJW"....hmmmmmmm. Though I know you think you must be making some pretty important points, they are absurd. The little weasel John White and jerk Brian Studdard are making their pockets fat off the fast food industry. They pay their employees peanuts, not caring whether they (the employees) get by or not as long as they make weasel White and Studdard their almighty dollar! I have been a restaurant manager for a "melodramatic fast food restaurant" for over 15 years. And yes "RJW", I actually am able to support my family of four. And what do you mean the employees would have tried to steal the fixtures? Are you kidding me? How totally ridiculous!!! Who wants all the old, worn out, dirty crap Captain D's had to offer! If Studdard had actually "fixed up the joint" you might have a valid point. Who wants a crap load of slaw, old hushpuppy mix and moldy food from the cooler? Not me! Those kids losing their job IS serious "RJW". You must not be from St. Joe because NO ONE has a ""Now Hiring" sign on their lot! So don't worry "RJW", sounds like you are safe cleaning toilets. McDonald's nor Taco Bell would hire anyone as simple minded as you.

stupidpeople101 - First, change you name to 'englishishardtounderstand". The restaurant is not melodramatic, the post is...

Second, I am in St. Joseph. The McDonald's on the North Belt has had a help wanted sign in their drive-thru for months. Show up between 2-4 and ask for Tim. Good luck!!

Personally, I support the owner in not telling the employees until the last moment.

Nothing good would come from telling them anything early.

I know a few people that were given notice by Harley-Davidson that their jobs were ending, and I would not want to buy a Harley built by disgruntled workers -

I sure would not want to eat a meal prepared by any!

Plenty of fast food jobs, hummmm, I've not considered that avenue of employment.

Unemployment, nope, I did not take that route either.

Good jobs, we need good jobs, where are those?

And good fish, we need good fried fish, where is it?

Ummmmmmm

Anyway, on another note, why do so many of you treat each other so poorly?

Would you talk the same way to each other face to face?

Next time I’m through Tampa I’ll try it.

My favorite seafood place in Key West is B.O.’s Fish Wagon. They don’t have their own website, but the link below is to a place that rated it and shows some pictures.

Their cracked conch is great. That’s one of my favorite seafood dishes. The only places I’ve found better are in Nassau in the Bahamas and Montego Bay, Jamaica.

See "RJW" or John, or is it Jon?.... People like you are the reason I "hatestupidpeople".....did you mean change YOUR name perhaps instead of change YOU name? Again, I am not the one needing a job! (You must have difficulty reading). You definitely do not live in St. Joseph, John/Jon. And as "Andrea" stated, no one cares about your personal endeavor to make this your funny little blog session. As she said "get over yourself".....go back to your janitorial duties!!! "MichaelH" said it perfectly, "quit being such a cry baby!!!" This article is about a business closing. Maybe you need to read it again?
