TITLE: Love Train: The Sound of Philadelphia Live in Concert (Legacy)

ARTISTS: Jerry Butler, the Delfonics, Harold Melvin’s Blue notes, Bunny Sigler and more

STARS: 3 out of 5 Stars

SOUNDS LIKE: You heard the audio, now see video of the Sound of Philadelphia.

The hits just keep coming from Kenny Gamble/Leon Huff’s Philly soul musical vault. Last year, Legacy re-released a ton of Philly Soul recordings from the likes of Billy Paul, the O’Jays and Harold Melvin’s Blue Notes. The deluge culminated in a popular and critically acclaimed 4-CD box set entitled, “Love Train: The Sound Of Philadelphia.”

Now Legacy and Gamble/Huff Music have released a visual accompaniment to that box set called “Love: Train: The Sound of Philadelphia in Concert.”

The DVD captures a live concert with the who’s who of Philly Soul that was held June 7th 2008 at the Borgata Hotel & Casino in Atlantic City New Jersey.

The lineup includes: Jerry Butler, the Delfonics, Harold Melvin’s Blue Notes, G.C. Cameron, the Three Degrees, the O’Jays and a few other Philadelphia International Records legends.

The two hour DVD looks quite good visually. The program was shot in high definition with state of the art sound quality production. And the music is good.

It’s a treat to see the remaining members of each classic group and legendary individual performers on stage once again. But it’s also somewhat bittersweet to see not only how old they are now but how old their audience is now too.

Even though the Blue Notes sound pretty much like they did in the old days it’s still sad to see Teddy Pendergrass missing from the lineup. Pendergrass was paralyzed in an automobile accident in 1982.

G.C. Cameron does OK on “Me and Mrs. Jones.” Still it would have been nice to see Billy Paul, the man who made this 1970s adultery anthem famous.

The Delfonics can’t hit those high notes as well anymore either. But “La La (Means I Love You)” is one of those songs that will eternally sound good.

“Live” is a good addition to the DVD collection of anyone who grew up with his music. For anyone younger, I suggest buying the audio version first to truly appreciate these acts in their prime.
