Silver-Haired Legislature, aging board elections set
by Ray Scherer
Saturday, May 2, 2009

Elections for local representatives to the Missouri Silver-Haired Legislature and Northwest Missouri Area Agency on Aging board are set for Tuesday.

The elections will be from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. In St. Joseph, seniors can cast a ballot at InterServ’s Calvin Center Senior Meals Site, 1412 N. Third St., or at Wesley Senior Towers, 1002 Francis St.

Those running for the area aging board position are Chester “Chip” Evans, Helen Leimbach-Zech and Donna Wright. The director will represent Andrew, Buchanan, Clinton and DeKalb counties for the 2010 fiscal year. The agency provides funding for senior programs such as home-delivered meals and in-home services.

The Silver-Haired Legislature consists of residents 60 and older who promote advocacy for the state’s older adults. All members are volunteers who serve without pay. Senior citizens elect three senators and 12 representatives from each of 10 area agencies on aging, for a total of 30 senators and 120 representatives.

A two-day statewide conference to prepare five priority bills is held each fall. The proposed legislation is then forwarded to the Missouri General Assembly for the upcoming year’s consideration.

Call Angie Gardner at 232-7779 for more information on the local elections. Call the area aging agency in Albany at (660) 726-3800 for more information on the regional elections.
