Freedom

I do not believe motorcyclists should be forced to wear helmets and I do not believe drivers should be forced to wear seat belts. This is just another case of the government interfering in people’s private lives where they should not be.

Lost

Kudos to the person who wanted arrows going to the garage sale. People, please give us a clue in the paper where you are located. That would be the biggest benefit with garage sale season in full swing right now. I drove 20 minutes trying to find one.

A light hand

I have a concern on our justice system, especially in our rural areas. I read about a manslaughter charge in Gower, Mo., and the person gets probation for taking another life. In Nodaway County, a father was stabbed to death and that person gets voluntary manslaughter. Very alarming to see this kind of justice.

Losing hand

The city approved a transfer of $14,730 from the riverfront gaming fund to the special allocation fund to cover legal costs associated with The Commons development. I voted when we had that up for vote that the money from the gaming would be going to the schools. So now we have the schools saying they need more money and we’re giving the money from the gaming fund to cover legal costs for the The Commons development?

Editor’s note: The state’s 21 percent tax on riverboat casino revenue goes toward education; since 1994 the city has received a share of an additional $2 per patron admission fee, which provides money for municipal uses.

Tough on kids

I wanted to express my opinion about the school district’s choices. I know they are trying to do what’s right but they have alienated so many people, especially when it comes to the school transfers. It is not fair for a child who has attended a school since before preschool with one more year to go to have to move to a different school.

Sticky fingers

Well, the price of scrap metal must be up. You can’t have anything laying around in your backyard or the thieves will carry it away. I just thought I would pass the warning along.

Our poor

I would just like to say bless all of the members of the St. Joe church who took the 800 mile “mission of love” trip to Kentucky for the poor people and to the people who donated. This proves that we have poor people in the United States who we need to take care of instead of shipping all we do overseas. We need to think of our own people first.

light hand - Good observations!
We hear so much talk for example about the need for gun control as an aid in controlling crime when the real problem is a justice system that allows perpetrators off with a slap on the wrist.
Have a individual in the commission of "any" crime with "any" weapon serve a mandatory 10 years sentence with no parole for a first offense see if the crime rates might not change. One thing for certain, it would serve as a deterrent or many more of the bad people would be off the streets for a much longer period of time.

I am just fine with wearing a seat balt, in fact, I don't even start my car until everyone in it has their's buckled. It is a safety precaution that we should all observe. I feel the same way when it come to wearing a helmet while riding a motorcycle. My brother and his wife never go anywhere unless they both have their helmets on. That is one thing I don't mind the government inferring on!!!!!

OK I am really not a dumb person but I can not figure out how to use the "recommend" option. I have tried everything I can think of. Can someone let me in on the secret? Thanks in advance!!

younggrandma,

I had a problem with the recommend function a few weeks ago here at the newspaper, even when I was logged in, so perhaps I can help you out if apmastrangelo's advice didn't do the trick.

My problem was that the thumb graphics didn't show up at all on the screen, making it impossible to vote. As a reporter, I don't vote on the comments, but I asked our online editor about it because I was curious why the site was not loading properly for me (and wondered if our readers were having the same issue).

Here's the easy fix he gave me: just hit the 'F5' key. It's similar to clicking the refresh button on your browser. The page reloads and suddenly the thumbs (and recommend option) were there. I don't know if this will work for you, but it fixed my problem with one keystroke.

Right now running is a choice, but walking is safer. When does it stop? We all make our choices in life. Make good ones or you might have a job in government.

I agree it's for our saftey to be wearing a seatbelt and we all should. So why are there no seatbelts on the school bus for our children?
It's just crazy to ride with out a helmet. Even the scooters crazy things happen and the helmet helps protect you.

you can beat a 17month old to death and get involuntary manslaughter because the crime wasn't charged correctly. i mean come on, you don't know that hitting a child with your fists, stomping on his stomach, would result in his death. the laws do need to change, and the way they are prosecuted needs to be the place we start.

apmastrangelo & ClintonThomas..... Thank you both. Unfortunatly neither suggestion worked for me. I have both thumbs on the screen but left or right clicks have never worked. I guess it must just be my computer.
