Esther de Waal coming to Atchison

Esther de Waal, a writer on Benedictine and Celtic spirituality, is making a rare American tour. She will be at the Sophia Center in Atchison, Kan., on June 2 to introduce her latest book, “Seeking Life: The Baptismal Invitation of the Rule of St. Benedict.” From 2 to 4 p.m., she will hold a conversation with the Benedictine community, which is open to the public. From 7 to 9 p.m., she will present “The Rule as a Guide for Living Your Baptismal Call in a World of Crisis.”

Carnival at Journey Church

Journey Church, 3004 Pickett Road in St. Joseph, will host its second annual carnival from 2 to 5 p.m. May 30. The event is sponsored by Triumphant Procession, and G-Force will be back by popular demand. New this year will be a Moonbounce. Concessions also will be available.

Altar Society to meet

St. Anne’s Altar Society will meet at 12:30 p.m. June 4 at the St. Francis Xavier Parish Center.

Gary Fagan in concert

Clarksdale First Baptist Church will host Gary Fagan in concert at 10:30 a.m. May 24. Mr. Fagan is a Clarksdale native who now lives in the Kirksville area. He ministers at revivals, has appeared on Christian television, has produced CDs and more. Everyone is invited.

Ladies of Charity host tea

Ladies of Charity will host a tea May 27 at St. Francis Parish Center, 2618 Seneca St. Rosary will be recited at 11:40 a.m., with Mass at noon followed by a tea luncheon, reception of new members, installation of officers and shower for birthright. All women interested are welcome to attend.

Greater Jesus Tabernacle holds revival

Johnny James of Springfield, Ohio, will be the guest speaker at Greater Jesus Tabernacle, 28th and Mitchell, May 27 through 29. He is a college circuit lecturer and a national evangelist with Pentecostal Assemblies of the World. Services begin at 7:30 p.m., and guest choirs from St. Joseph and Kansas City will be singing each night. The public is invited.

Zion welcomes Beverly Grienke

The pulpit at Zion United Church of Christ will be filled May 24 by the Rev. Beverly Grienke. The 10:30 a.m. service will include the sacrament of baptism. Zion is located at Ninth and Faraon streets. Anyone interested is welcome to attend.

Zion’s pastor, Stephen H. King, recently completed his second year at St. Paul School of Theology in Kansas City. He and Mrs. King are celebrating their 40th wedding anniversary this weekend.
