Atchison County bond issue passes

Atchison County Clerk Susette Taylor has confirmed the passage of Rock Port’s school issue. Voters approved the bond issue, which would replace the 80-year-old junior and senior high school building.

There were 460 “yes” votes and 343 “no” votes. It was at least the sixth time the issue was placed on the ballot.

There was a request to recount the 74 votes cast in Watson, but it didn’t change the outcome. Watson’s voting results were 18 “yes” votes and 56 “no” votes.

“The verification process that we go through is kind of a standard process after the election,” Ms. Taylor said.

She explained that a team of judges come in and verifies that all results on all machine tape totals match the numbers Ms. Taylor records.

“If they are identical then the numbers are correct,” she said. “I have never had a recount change the number of those machines. They are so much more accurate than the manual count.”

The issue needed a voter approval rating of 57.1 percent. It barely passed.

“I stress to voters all the time that every vote counts,” Ms. Taylor said. “And this time every vote counted.”

Here's an idea, build a county school instead of wasting money on a new building. Unlikely though, as that would be progressive thinking.
