Officer bitten by police dog

A St. Joseph police officer was bitten by his dog during a training exercise Tuesday.

Officer Brian McLintick was taken by ambulance to Heartland Regional Medical Center, where Capt. Kevin Castle said he was still being treated as of Tuesday afternoon.

Mr. Castle said the officer's dog, Cosmo, mistook Mr. McLintick's arm for the bite sleeve commonly used during the training drills.

While the incident is being handled as an accident, a canine training officer is looking over the situation.

"As someone who has worked the canine unit, I can say that if you do it long enough, you're going to get bit," Mr. Castle said.

Cosmo and Mr. McLintick are fairly new partners in the department's canine unit. Cosmo is a Belgian Malinois.

Do they still train these dogs in public places? They used to train them at Krug Park. I am glad a citizen wasn't bitten

I'm pretty sure they train them at the City Yards down by the river.

"Do it long enough and you're going to get bit."

How long has McLintick been handling K-9's? Not long, I'm sure. Sounds like bad odds...

On a side note those bite sleeves are huge. Brian must be working out because last time I saw him he had some itty bitty arms. Maybe the dog was just asserting his dominance? They say they can detect weakness and will act on it.

LibertyOrDeath, your "side note" is ridiculous. What type of "weakness" are you alluding to. Were you at the training? No. Have you experienced bite work with a K9? No. The locations for training are not restricted to city yards. By your thoughts, I'm "pretty sure" you like to hear yourself talk regardless of your accuracy on the subject matter.

Stuff it Stjoecitizen (or Brian, whichever you prefer).

I've worn the sleeve and I've taken off running, turned and let the dog have his fun - been there done that threw the t-shirt away.

No one said training was "restricted to city yards." Are you that desperate to "get me" that your own comments reflect the same ignorance you're trying to pin me with?

By your thoughts, I'm "pretty sure" you have an ax to grind regardless of the fact that you lack the ax.

I was insinuating that McLintick is a bean pole. I was making the humorous observation of the claim that the dog was confused that he had the bite sleeve. Apparently the dog is retarded as McLintick's sleeves aren't anywhere near as big as a bite sleeve. It's less funny when you say it that way, though.

Anything else you'd like to chime in about smartypants?

Go show the citizens how big a man you are, cop. Isn't there someone jaywalking in midtown that you need to catch?

I'm getting a mental picture of Liberty or Death. I think I see an image of the man in the Dos Equis commercials (the most interesting man in the world) with a portion of Cliffy from the old Cheers show, you know, a know it all type.
