KANSAS CITY — The Kansas City Royals have agreed to terms with infielder Wilson Betemit, a 28-year-old infielder who spent last season in the Chicago White Sox organization.
The Royals signed the switch-hitting Betemit to a minor league contract. Reports of the agreement came out Wednesday, but the Royals didn’t confirm the move until Thursday morning.
He opened last season on the White Sox roster and hit .200 in 20 games, playing first and third base. In 72 games with Triple-A Charlotte in 2009, he hit .241 with 11 home runs and 49 RBIs.
A seven-year veteran, Betemit made his Major League debut as a 19-year-old with the Braves in 2001. He’s played for four different teams.
While most of his field experience comes at shortstop or third base, Betemit has appeared at all four infield positions and has played a small amount in the outfield.
Betemit’s best year came in 2006 while splitting time with the Braves and the Dodgers. He hit .263 with 18 home runs and 53 RBIs.
Betemit also reached double digits in home runs and 50 RBIs the following season between playing time with the Dodgers and Yankees.
During his two best seasons, he appeared in 264 games. Betemit saw action in only 107 during the past two years with the Yankees and White Sox.
Last week, the Royals sent veteran utility player Mark Teahen to the White Sox in a three-player deal. The move helped shed the Royals of Teahen’s salary, while acquiring youthful infielders Chris Getz and Josh Fields.
While Getz and Fields are expected to compete for starting spots, Betemit faces a challenge of making the team.
