Despite fairly nice weather over the weekend, deer totals were down throughout Missouri.
According to the Department of Conservation, there were 86,214 deer killed during the first two days of open season. There were 98,296 deer killed during opening season in 2008.
In the northwest region, there were 12,676 deer killed compared to 15,903 in 2008. High counties in northwest Missouri were Harrison County with 1,121, Nodaway County with 1,041 and Linn County with 958.
Deer season opened Nov. 14 and concludes 30 minutes after sunset on Nov. 24. Hunters have until 10 p.m. daily to report.

Don't sweat it any, we'll make up for it with deer/car collisions.
How's that 4-point system working now? The Dept of Conservation's trophy buck system is great for people who want to eat antlers, but horrible for people driving.

I think everyone forgets that we (Man) built our highways through their land and forests. Don't get mad at the deer.

I think deer in missouri should not be allowed to cross any highway without having at the very least liability insurance.

What bothers me is that the deer think they don't have to cross where the deer crossing signs are.
If people have to cross at designated crosswalks so should the deer.

I'm not complaining that deer are crossing the highways, I'm complaining that the Department of Conservation's trophy buck program is leading to an increased number of deer, thereby increasing the number of collisions. I for one and glad to see the deer, but managing a herd population based on having trophy antlers is absolutely stupid.
Especially when one considers that the deer acting all stupid during the rut are the bucks, regardless of how big their antlers are. So they can be killed and harvested during the season, as they once were; or we can enjoy continued increases in the population and increases in car/deer collisions.
And since deer in Missouri were damned near extinct in the 1920's, how many of these highways do you suppose actually were built before the populations were actually pretty good? Man is now the only strong predator of deer. Other than natural causes, the primary ways of herd control is hunting or death by vehicle.
