Heavy snow through Tuesday

Heavy snow is expected today as a low pressure system moves through central Kansas and Missouri through Tuesday night. Many areas so far in northern Kansas have received 3-plus inches of snow, with a reported eight inches of snow and power outages in Morrowsville, Kan., around 8 a.m.

Slush build up could make for slick roadways and dangerous driving conditions. All precipitation is expected to turn into heavy wet snow. Snowfall rates could reach near one inch per hour, increasing the dangerous driving conditions. A total of three to five inches is possible for most of northwest Missouri. Visibility will be heavily reduced during the heavy snow periods. As of Monday morning, Sabetha, Kan., had already received three inches of snow.

Given the recent string of above-average temperatures, the ground is still at such a temperature to melt snow. However, the snowfall rates will be high enough to overcome the melting, causing snow build-up on streets. U.S. Highway 136 between Tarkio, Mo., and Rock Port, Mo., is already covered with slush.

While the snow is falling, winds will remain in the 10 to 20 miles per hour range, keeping the wind chill below freezing. Make sure to protect all exposed skin when outside, as frost bite may be possible if exposed to these elements for more than 45 minutes.

The snowfall is expected to last until Tuesday morning, gradually lessening up through the overnight hours. By Tuesday morning, sleet and rainfall will return to the area. Highs will build back up to the mid 50's by the weekend, with sunshine.
