Officials keeping eye on rising Platte River

Weather service issues flood warning

First the snow, now the water.

The National Weather Service has issued a flood warning for the Platte River at Agency. Also, Route W in DeKalb County has been closed due to water over the road, according to the Missouri Department of Transportation.

In Agency, the Platte River was at 19.13 feet Tuesday and was expected to crest today at 20.2 feet. Low-lying areas east of Agency begin flooding when the river reaches 20 feet, though more severe flooding doesn't occur unless the Platte reaches 25 feet or more.

The flood warning is in effect until Thursday.

Buchanan County Emergency Management Director Bill Brinton said although St. Joseph hasn't been hit with any severe flooding, he's keeping an eye on the situation.

"We're continuing to watch it," he said, "The river is one of the first things I check when I wake up, and one of the last things I check before I go to sleep."

In DeKalb County, Route W was closed between Route A and Route D north of Maysville on Monday night at 11:55 p.m. MoDOT maintenance crews have signs installed on Route W, and motorists will need to choose an alternate route.

But after a hectic Monday morning white-out, St. Joseph and most of the surrounding area is in the clear.

"We got lucky because with warm ground temperatures and rain that kicked in, it melted all the snow," said Justin Gesling, meteorologist with St. Joe Now.

While many parts of Northwest Missouri had up to 4 inches of snow, St. Joseph had just under 3 inches of snowfall accumulation on Monday. And snow is not in the immediate forecast.

"It should be a clear weekend," Mr. Gesling said. "And it will be cold from here on out. Gone are the days of 60-degree weather."

Both the Missouri State Highway Patrol and MoDOT give a clear report for road conditions on Interstate 29 and U.S. Highway 36 in the Northwest Missouri area.
