Award offered on weapons theft

A $1,000 reward is being offered for information leading to the recovery of stolen police weapons and/or the arrest of persons responsible for the theft.

The Buchanan County Criminal Justice Foundation and the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge No. 3 are providing a $1,000 cash reward for information about the theft of a black Colt AR-15, 223-caliber, 16-inch barrel, collapsible stock, with one magazine; a black Rock River M4 AR-15 223 caliber, 11-inch barrel, with an M3 Aim Point site, a Sure Fire Light, and a M-900A fore-grip; Sig Sauer P226 40-caliber pistol with a TLR Stream Light firearm tac light; a Point Blank tactical vest and an AA Arms NFDD Flash Bang.

The weapons and equipment were taken on Nov. 10 from a St. Joseph Police Department vehicle parked at an officer's home.

The usefulness of information provided in the recovery/arrests is the primary determining factor for reception of the cash reward, said Capt. Kevin Castle, a police spokesman.

Individuals with information are encouraged to call the St. Joseph Police Department Detective Division at 271-5336. If they wish to remain anonymous, they can call the Tips hotline at 238-TIPS. All calls to the Tips hotline are confidential.

Any possibility whatsoever that the officer may be involved?

I find it hard to believe that someone in this city or county have not heard squat. Generally speaking, these types of people like to talk. 238-TIPS should be renamed 238-rat-a-family-member/friend-out. Not that I have a problem with it, I'm just saying that typically family and friends are the first to learn about these things by the thieves and, typically, it's those family members that give the best tips.

I think all scum of society should be shunned. I just hate it when people do it annonymously. I think low-life's should be publicly humiliated for their inconsideration to their fellow man.

Well libertyordeath. I agree with you on the scum being shunned. But I think most family members who give up ken would like to keep it private. What happens if the cops fail to prosecute? This could stir up a hornets nest and may cause more problems for the snitch. This would prevent future snitches from snitchin. Lets keep snitching private!

Why do you think the mayor needs these weapons anyway?

Keep snitching private and you perpetuate the notion the person ratting out the low-life is doing something wrong, when in fact, they are doing something very right.

I understand what you're saying, but we as a society need to treat the situation differently.

Let the low-life get angry and do whatever they want. If we as a society stepped up and did our part to protect each other the low-life wouldn't have much retribution in their arsenal.

Um, no, the officer was definitely not involved.. He is a stand up guy. It's so ridiculous to even put that thought out there... but of course, SJPD can NEVER be victim, their always suspect and the underdog. Seriously now, c'mon.

If someone else has this happen to them, say a military man, everyone would be SO sympathetic. No one would say "well, oh my, why were his weapons in his vehicle, garage, etc..???"

I hope we find the idiots who did this... and I hope people realize that it can happen to anyone..

Listen I may not be 80 years old but I've seen enough in my day to know the ol', "he was such a family man, always quiet never bothered anyone" is NOT a dependable investigation or character assessment.

That being said, I never said he was involved. I posed the notion asking if it was even considered.

If that is a failed train of thought why do all murder cases immediately look to family and friends as potential suspects?

Ok, lets see...If Im in a profession that requires me to possibly use firearms to stop the bad guys and also keep firearms like the ones stolen out of the hands of bad guys, so I'll just drive home at the end of the day and leave those types of weapons in the car....Are you serious? I seriously hope this is not the way SJPD conducts business...SJPD needs to be held accountable for their flawed standard operating procedures regarding weapons and ordance storage. Cause the flashbang is a class 3 explosive, not a weapon.

I just can't phathom the ignorance to offer a $1,000.00 reward for the weapons or a tip on an arrest...Two of the weapons are easily valued at around $1,400.00 a piece. Then you put on the bells and whistles and it easily jumps. I want to see the look on whoevers face is responsible for the blatant flawed oversight of weapons and ordance storage if these weapons are used in anyway to harm some innocent person....I guess the reward then would be alittle more then a thousand dollars!

The SJPD should have one MAJOR priority right now and that is to get the weapons and ordance back into the hands of the good guys, period. Then make sure this NEVER happens again.

This seems way too stupid to offer a $1,000 reward for nearly $4,000 worth of equipment, paritcularly since the 11" barrel AR-15 and the grenade are Class III weapons. I'm sure there will be an overwhelming response by anyone with knowledge.

Not to long ago i read in the paper that the SJPD does not arrest illegal immigrants unless they commit another crime hello they are trespassing arrest them now, charge them with trespassing. Has anyone thought that maybe the weapons are in Mexico now where they would be worth alot more? If you read the internet they're always talking about weapons smuggling into Mexico for the drug cartels. I'm not saying it was a illegal i am wondering though since they know they won't be arrested by the SJPD for breaking the law. I know i'll hear alot of complaining about my question, couldn't this have happened? I don't believe they have any respect for our laws or our country.

Tiger and Liberty, I dont know about you but I absolutely love the fact that someone will negitively rate a comment that has everything to do with "DOING THE RIGHT THING". I guess I should change my views and say no dont look at what was wrong with the situation and knowing someone is accountible for the weapons that the TAX payers PAID for and responsible for them either directed to be place in the car or just put in there by the officer. But I guess in that person's view if the thieves rob them with the SJPD's weapons or worse it is ALL the thieves fault, not where they got the arsenal of "MILITARY GRADE" weapons.

I wasn't talking about you brother. Just the fact that people will negitively rate something but they have no logical reasoning for their rating. Not that this is a popularity contest at all, just a discussion about doing whats right.

If some of you would stop for a minute and THINK about what you are reading you might realize the $1000 has a very good chance of working.

The $1000 isn't necessarily for the one who has the equipment and stands to profit from it. It could very well be for someone who KNOWS who has the equipment but has no financial interest in it thus nothing to lose by turning the information in.
