If you happen to be having dinner or drinks at your favorite St. Joe restaurant or watering hole this week, don’t be surprised if a comedian and a camera crew show up.
The stand-up comic Alex Reymundo, who films his Showtime/Comedy Central special at 7 and 9 p.m. Saturday at the Missouri Theater, is doing a meet-and-greet publicity tour with production crew in tow. They’ll be stopping by 12 restaurants and bars between tonight and Friday, with an additional appearance in Coleman Hawkins Park just hours before his Saturday performance.
“That guy is going to be the hardest-working man in town,” said Patty Karr, co-owner of Foster’s, one of Mr. Reymundo’s many stops.
People in St. Joseph may be familiar with Mr. Reymundo as one of the “Original Latin Kings of Comedy” and as the opening act for Blue Collar Comedian Ron White when he performed at the Missouri Theater last October.
Mr. Reymundo and his special’s production crew have been working closely with city and business sponsors to make this promotional tour happen. Beth Conway, communications director for the St. Joseph Convention and Visitors Bureau, says it will help Mr. Reymundo get comfortable, create buzz for the show and give locals a unique opportunity.
“He really wanted to get himself saturated in St. Joe,” Ms. Conway said. “It is rare that you get to see and hang out with the star of the show at any level.”
During Mr. Reymundo’s multiple stops, he will be recruiting “shot girls” to serve him tequila on stage. Footage taken of fan interactions and St. Joe landmarks will be featured in the introduction video to his special, and as bonus content when the performance is released on Blu-Ray and DVD.
While the appearances Mr. Reymundo is making will ultimately be to his benefit, Ms. Conway says it is also a way to show his appreciation.
“Alex has made a commitment to St. Joseph because he had a great experience with Ron White,” she says. “He really wants to showcase the community.”
