The Fallout provides the only all-ages music venue in St. Joe

The Fallout, 508 Edmond St., hosts its first live show on Oct. 17.

The Fallout, 508 Edmond St., hosts its first live show on Oct. 17.

St. Joseph offers a variety of places to enjoy live music, but those who are 16, 18 or 20 usually can’t get into them.

“There are a lot of kids out there that have nothing to do on the weekends,” says Andrew Rivera, bassist/guitarist for Eastwood, a local band of high school and college-aged musicians.

Since the Scallywag closed in 2007, there has been no all-ages live music venue in St. Joseph. Tyson Moran and Pete Shapiro saw that void and are attempting to fill it.

Moran and Shapiro plan to officially open The Fallout at 508 Edmond St. in November. The building will host donation-only concerts until the venue meets the city’s vendor standards.

The Fallout will mostly feature performances from underage bands who can’t get gigs at local bars.

“We want to give those guys some shows because it gets frustrating rehearsing all the time and never getting a chance to play in front of an audience,” says Moran, 22, a security guard at Iatan Power Plant and a former member of the band Forgotten Enemy.

Although it’s a work in progress, Moran and Shapiro plan to add some old arcade games, TVs and a pool table. Moran says the venue will close around 11 p.m. or midnight so no one is out too late.

Most importantly, there will be no drinking or smoking allowed at The Fallout, and the venue will give back to the community through canned food, coat and blanket drives in the future.

“If they’re in our venue, they’re safe and they’re not out getting drunk,” Moran says. “This is more about the teenage scene more than just the music scene.”

However, there are plenty of concerns. Will there be enough of a sustainable audience to keep The Fallout open? Will young people behave at the venue? Will those under 16 be able to find rides to the downtown location?

Former Scallywag owner Justin Tatro knows firsthand how unpredictable young crowds can be.

“Kids are kind of fickle,” Tatro says. “It was amazing. You’d make $2,000 one night and $10 the next.”

Eastwood drummer and Central High School junior Jason Goacher feels Moran and Shapiro have learned from the mistakes made by previous all-ages venue owners and that the swelling youth music movement in St. Joseph is a different animal compared to what Tatro encountered just two years ago.

“Younger people, like in high school and college, are a lot more enthusiastic about supporting the local scene and going to see their favorite bands,” Jason explains. “While the older scene seems to go a bar, drink and watch a cover band, younger people seem to be more passionate.”

Eastwood will headline the first show at The Fallout with Atherea and The Catalyst at 7 p.m. Oct. 17. The suggested donation is $5.

A Halloween show on Oct. 31 also is planned with E.I.S., Bear in a Ballpit and two more acts yet to be determined.
