Levy group reports campaign finances
About $50,000 raised so far
by Ken Newton
Saturday, October 17, 2009

The committee campaigning for an increase in the St. Joseph School District tax levy has raised about $50,000, a spokesman for the group said Friday.

More than 120 individuals, businesses and school groups have given money, said Seth Wright of the campaign, called “Our Children. Our Future. Our Decision.”

“Between what we have in the door and the commitments we’ve been able to obtain, we’re confident we’ll be able to run a successful campaign,” he said.

The campaign committee wants district voters to pass a 63-cent levy increase with a five-year sunset clause.

Such an increase would restore local school funding to the level of earlier this year, before the 63 cents (per $100 assessed valuation) expired in a sunset.

An attempt to renew the levy without a sunset clause failed in April. The election is Nov. 3.

A report filed with the Missouri Ethics Commission Thursday night showed total contributions of $14,390 through Sept. 30.

Additional filings required for large contributions indicated another $20,000 given during October.

Mr. Wright said the quarterly report does not reflect the contributions that continue to arrive.

“As of Oct. 1, we had only been up and running the campaign about three weeks,” he said. “The money had not been in the door at that point.”

When the campaign committee formed in September, its leaders had hopes of raising upwards of $160,000 for the effort. Mr. Wright said that number pointed to a “worst-cast scenario” of organized opposition. That opposition has not arisen.

State law requires that contributions of $5,000 or more from a single contributor be reported within 48 hours. In October, those contributions came from Heartland Health, $10,000 (monetary gifts on Oct. 2 and Oct. 14); St. Joseph PTA Council, $5,000; and Nodaway Valley Bank, $5,000.

The quarterly report filed Thursday listed 62 itemized contributions from individuals, companies and PTA groups.

The largest of the contributors were Triumph Foods, $2,000; Dr. Mark Laney, Heartland Health chief executive, $1,000; Lowell Kruse, former Heartland Health chief executive, $1,000; Skaith School PTA, $1,000; and WireCo World Group, $1,000.

The biggest expenditure listed in the quarterly report was $4,962 for campaign signs. Volunteers for the campaign will be going door-to-door today to discuss the levy issue and place yard signs.

Missouri law requires another financial disclosure from campaign committees on Oct. 26, eight days before the election.

Well Far cry from the 160,000 they thought they were going to be getting how in the world will they be able to pay Unicm Arc 80,000 to work with us all on the long range plan for our schools? And as far as you opposition I think you find it come Nov 3rd evening when the results are released to the public of the election.
Now they say the door knocking will start today in the neighborhoods well we will see if this is happening in all areas of town today as these signs go up and people start to communicate with each other. Also if they are out in all parts of the community we will see how many signs are in yards around town and actually support this flawed levy for our schools that will stlll take programs away from our schools, children and teachers. Not to mention it will not address the issue of overcrowding that has happened due to schools closings, redistricting,NCLB Sanctions.

Someone help me out here. The way I look at the quarterly report which is supposed to report all cash on hand and expenditures for the last quarter - either the expenditures are missing or they have alot more cash on hand than they are reporting. Where is the expenditure for the polling that was done last month?

I just feel bad that it is the underlings who have to go door-to-door to correct something that the higher-ups fowled up. By the way, I'm hearing it's not just the teachers being asked to go door-to-door. It's all school district underlings.

I wonder if this levy fails if the OCOF and GOF will walk away and not work on anything any longer such as the long term planning with Unicam Arc.

Axium - isn't that a political consulting firm? Why would they be funding a campaign? I am wrong about that?

I wonder who did the polling for OCOF? Wouldn't it be something if it ended up being Axium? That would make one wonder if this was all part a grand conspiracy - make the levy without the sunset fail the first time, then be behind the group to get it back on the ballot with the sunset again.....Just wondering out loud.

dillygent-Where do you get your info from? Might be in your best interest to get the facts before you open your big mouth. Makes you look pretty silly.

I work for the district no one I know has been asked to go door to door or donate to this campaign.

The misinformation presented by some on the site is mind boggling. Thank god there is only a handful of you.

terrebatu,
I have never know dillygent to post something on here if she or he was not told this by someone who actually knows.I have heard this little rumor in our schools as well.Maybe you were not asked to go door to door or to donate. And since you work for the district if we are so misinformed then why in the hek does the district not inform us.Is it a little secret like so many other things they do that they do not want to involve the community. We know thay have a "COMMUNICATION" problem already. On another note here it is almost 4pm Saturday nobody has been in the neighborhood yet talking to our part of this community and putting up any signs. Must be true the NE I bet is full of signs and this is the only area they are targeting.

District underlings? To whom do you refer, dilly? It is a bit of a derogatory term, don't you think?

Also, what is really the benefit of putting up a bunch of yard signs? How does it help the cause?

Terrebatu, I talked to reliable district personnel. I know what I'm talking about. In fact, I talked to a person today who was visited. Kind of an interesting campaign, though. This person was asked how he/she intended to vote. The homeowner answered. The district person thanked them for their answer, wrote it on a clipboard and left. Interesting way of campaigning.Terrebatu, did you go for a walk today with your clipboard or did you give the big donation? As far as my comment about the "underlings,"...how many of the administrators, or the people who decided to run both issues in April, made the walk today? I see you administrators are back on cue. Welcome back.

Sort of an odd approach if that is what is truly happening and homeowners are being asked how they will vote. It appears there is an effort to gauge the numbers before the vote. Tactic is usually used if there is a concern about the agenda. Like I said, it is going to be interesting to see how this will all play out in a couple of weeks. I am anxious to see the end result and actually see how close this is going to be.

Terra - funny, I know many, many teachers at many different schools and they all were "asked" to go door to door. Wonder where you get your information? Or perhaps since you work for the district, you are doing a little damage control.

Actually John, I think the whole approach of trying to scold as a way to discuss is not very good either.I don't post unless I really think what I'm saying is accurate. The reaction to my post above is very much consistent with what I keep hearing from SJSD employees in regard to how they are often treated. Actually, if I were to hear that the administrators were going door to door with staff, I would be more than happy to make note of it on these posts, as a positive morale builder for the employees, which is my prime interest...treating employees and parents conscientiously.

drbjr,
No I did not ask for one I thought this was going to be the door knocking in the neighborhood weekend and they would have the signs with them.I guess it was true they were told to focus their efforts in the NE and forget the rest of the community.See I have stood firm on this and it is going to hurt them come NOV 3rd.Also Not to mention again all of the things that have happened since the levy failed in April and not to mention the fact this is not the right levy for the future of our schools and the long term financial needs of the schools.I am glad they knocked on your door in the NE and you got your sign. Now lets see them in the northend, southend, east end, southeast end and the midtown area going door to door.Lot of communication with the community going on isn't there?See my opinion is if they want votes I would be working to get the ones that you have alienated and the ones who are going to vote your levy request down.

The administrators are the ones who should be out knocking on the doors not sitting here doing damage control if this is indeed what is going on.But that is right they are still recieving their 100,000 plus salaires for messing our schools up and having other people do there dirty work.

Orliandor, Surely you are kidding. I don't know of a lot of teachers, cooks, bus drivers, or any others you mentioned, who make in excess of 70,000 dollars a year. If you can tell me that the administrators downtown look at all of the employees as equals with them, I will be forced to faint dead away.Actually, I hope they all look at everybody as equals, because maybe that will mean that teachers won't be laid off, as was done the last time. By the way, Orliandor, how many administrators were laid off last time? How many are worried about it this time, compared to the teachers and everybody else you mentioned?

Usually door-to-door campaigners drop leaflets or talk to residents about the message, ie. vote for the levy, the children, etc. Why would anyone try to establish a data base of supporters/opponents at this late date.

Which brings up this concern: the campaign is about where I would think it should be if we were voting in April; NOT for a vote on November 3, just 16 days away. The signs should have been up 2 weeks ago, not just starting now.

good to see apple back: but apple, it was a lackluster vote in the NE that produced the loss last April. Your people just didn't vote.

I wonder if my friends-- who teach in the district and who are under attack by their administrators -- and their friends and families will go ahead and vote for the levy.
The abuse of employees must stop. Dr. Dan understood that in 2004; Dr. M has no idea of political timing and very unprofessional treatment of staff. She ought to call off the "dogs" and treat people nicely from now through next April.

Peoplerule, How do the teachers, that you know, think of themselves in relation to the administration? I referred to the staff as "underlings" in 2 or 3 posts, and have been questioned each time on the use of that word. Quite honestly, I thought I was being nice, because I think the school district does NOT regard their staff in positive terms. Do I think of staff as "underlings?" No. I tend to look at them as victims of their superiors, and I feel they deserve a great deal of respect, which they don't seem to get--at least from those superiors.
