Missing teen found safe
Hiawatha police arrest suspect
by Hiawatha World

Friday, October 23, 2009

HIAWATHA, Kan. — A teenage girl from Marion County, Kan., who may have been abducted was found in Hiawatha Thursday.

Police Chief Evans Woehlecke said one of his officers located Tara Renee Simhiser, 17, at the Morrill & Janes Bank after a teller recognized her from an Amber Alert.

The man suspected of abducting her, Rojelio Hernandez, 21, was arrested in another part of town after police spotted a car that matched the description in the alert.

Mr. Woehlecke said apparently the pair went to the bank to cash a check. The teller stalled, and police were called shortly before 11:30 a.m. After briefly leaving, Ms. Simhiser came back into the bank to get the money. The car was gone. Mr. Woehlecke said it appears the plan was that Hernandez was supposed to come back and get her.

An officer then made contact with Ms. Simhiser.

“She’s fine, just scared,” Mr. Woehlecke said.

A short time later, officers on patrol located the suspect car at Fourth Street and Kansas Avenue. Mr. Hernandez was taken into custody without incident.

Police learned the pair spent the previous night in Hiawatha, he added. Why Ms. Simhiser went missing, and if she had a relationship with Mr. Hernandez, is still unclear.

As of early Thursday afternoon, Ms. Simhiser was being held in protective custody waiting to be picked up by the Marion County Sheriff’s Office. Mr. Hernandez also was being held for Marion County authorities.

Mr. Woehlecke said Mr. Hernandez will likely face some charges in Brown County stemming from the incident.

An Amber Alert was issued for Ms. Simhiser shortly before 6 p.m. Wednesday.

The Kansas Bureau of Investigation said Mr. Hernandez is the same person suspected of going around several schools in Kansas posing as a student. He’s wanted for questioning in Geary and Riley counties in connection with these

incidents.

Authorities have identified him as a man wanted for a probation violation out of Odessa, Texas.
