Kids just want to have fun. And at Wonderscope in Shawnee, Kan., they can do that plus learn a little something in the process with the center’s imaginative, hands-on, inter-disciplinary arts and sciences exhibits and programs for children 10 and under. Wonderscope hosts a wide range of programs every month, such as the theater production of “Goodnight Moon” scheduled for the first week of November, and after-school science programs every week. And there are five different exhibits to explore: H2Oh!, Healthy Kids, Lego Ocean Adventure, Raceways and Small Wonders, with all kinds of activities for children to do in each. H2Oh! is one of the two new exhibits this year. It’s a water play area with a build-your-own fountain experience and places where kids can race boats and play with water.
“Kids just love it,” says Anita Smith, marketing manager. “We have little aprons, but somehow kids still get wet. Fortunately, we do have T-shirts for sale.”
Raceways is the other new exhibit, and even adults will like it. It’s something like the popular Hot Wheels tracks, but more exciting and creative, she says. Children may need help from their parents, but that’s really what it’s about, anyway.
“All of Wonderscope is a great opportunity for family learning,” Ms. Smith says, “and for families to get in there and play together.”
Wonderscope is located at 5700 King St. in Shawnee, approximately 1.5 miles west of Interstate 35 and Johnson Drive. It’s open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday. For more information, visit www.wonderscope.org.
