A Plattsburg man was one of seven U.S. soldiers killed Tuesday in Afghanistan, the Defense Department confirmed Thursday.
Sgt. Issac B. Jackson, 27, died after enemy forces attacked an Army vehicle with an improvised explosive device. The attack occurred in Arghandab Valley, Afghanistan.
Mr. Jackson and the other fallen soldiers were assigned to the 1st Battalion, 17th Infantry Regiment, 5th Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division, based in Fort Lewis, Wash.
The six others killed in the attack were Staff Sgt. Luis M. Gonzalez, 27, of South Ozone Park, N.Y.; Sgt. Fernando Delarosa, 24, of Alamo, Texas; Sgt. Dale R. Griffin, 29, of Terre Haute, Ind.; Sgt. Patrick O. Williamson, 24, of Broussard, La.; Spc. Jared D. Stanker, 22, of Evergreen Park, Ill., and Pfc. Christopher I. Walz, 25, of Vancouver, Wash.
Mr. Jackson grew up in Plattsburg, where he attended school through the seventh grade. He graduated from Lathrop High School in 2001.
His death came during a difficult month for U.S. forces in Afghanistan. At least 55 U.S. troops have died in October.
On Thursday morning, President Barack Obama was on hand as the flag-covered cases of 18 fallen Americans, including the remains of Mr. Griffin, one of the soldiers killed in Tuesday’s attack, returned to Dover Air Force Base in Delaware.
The identities of the other fallen Americans returning to Dover Air Force Base were not disclosed.
