Sylvia Says: Open it without all the frustration
by Sylvia Anderson
Saturday, October 31, 2009

You’ve heard of road rage, where seemingly normal people become crazed and out of control from frustration with other drivers. Well, this time of year look for wrap rage. It’s almost as dangerous. Seriously, there have been more than 6,000 reported emergency-room incidents resulting from wrap rage, according to a press release by Zibra, manufacturers of “Open It!” a possible new solution to the problem.

True, nobody has died from it. But have you ever been in your car and tried to get batteries out of those superhard plastic shells using only a nail file? If so, you know wrap rage is real.

Open It! is basically one tool with five applications: for cutting things like hard plastic; snipping things like twist ties; slicing open boxes or really anything using a tiny retractable blade; as a screwdriver; and as a bottle cap opener. It looks something like a jazzed up pair of pliers with patented angular jaws to keep your hands free from the plastic’s sharp edges. So if you have two left hands, you won’t get hurt. And if you are simply left-handed, the design works for you, too.

The cutting blades are really sharp and go right through thick plastic. The retractable blade is very small, but sharp enough to do the job. And you never know when you might need a screwdriver or bottle cap opener. It’s basically like a big Swiss Army knife for the home.

The bottom line: Open it! is too big to carry in a purse or pocket, but it would be great for keeping in a car glove compartment and the “everything” kitchen drawer. Having one of these around may not solve world problems, but it should save your kitchen knives from abuse — and maybe your teeth. Open It! will be available at Bed Bath & Beyond nationwide starting Nov. 1. The suggested retail price is $9.99.
