Andrew County residents to have a say on new jail
by St. Joseph News-Press
Saturday, September 19, 2009

SAVANNAH, Mo. — Andrew County commissioners are slowing down the movement for a new jail. They want to allow voters to have a say.

The county commissioners appointed an advisory board to review a new jail plan they expect to receive the first week in October from Larry Goldberg, a St. Joseph architect.

“He’s a good salesman, but we will want this to be thoroughly reviewed,” said Greg Wall, Eastern District commissioner.

Preliminary discussions with city officials about a possible location for the jail have been halted. By state law, the jail will have to be in Savannah.

After due consideration, if the commission decides to go ahead with a plan for a new jail a location committee will assist in picking a site and listen to the pros and cons from Savannah residents, said Larry Atkins, the presiding commissioner.

“We’ve got to figure out if we can afford this thing and pay the bills first, said Darryl Howard, the Western District commissioner.

Former Western District Commissioner Dick Townsend, Roxanne Schweizer, Annette Weeks, Kathryn Ford, Bob Caldwell, Ken Gabriel and Mary Beth Thomas have agreed to serve on the advisory board.
