Hy-Vee pharmacy patrons pass by the rows of Children’s Tylenol products Monday morning in St. Joseph. Tylenol maker, McNeil Consumer Healthcare, voluntarily recalled certain lots of Children’s and Infant’s Tylenol liquid products on Friday. The recall is limited to only Tylenol liquid products manufactured between April 2008 and June 2008. Hy-Vee employees checked their products and found that none meet the recall parameters.

Keri Brostine figured she had a 50/50 chance that the bottles of Tylenol she had at home were safe.

Tylenol’s manufacturer voluntarily recalled certain lots of Children’s and Infant’s Tylenol liquid products on Friday because of concerns about one of the inactive ingredients.

Ms. Brostine found about four different versions of Tylenol products used for her three small children. Luckily, only one had to be thrown out.

“It makes you kind of nervous when you hear about stuff like this,” she said. “But I figured it happens and at least I know which ones to get rid of. I’m just hoping that nothing is wrong with my kids.”

It is wise to check it out, but not everyone needs to panic as they head to their medicine cabinets. The recall is limited to only Tylenol liquid products manufactured between April 2008 and June 2008. It does not apply to Tylenol Meltaways and Junior Strength Tylenol Meltaways.

Chances are greater that the products are already in a customer’s home rather than being purchased today in the store.

Most medicines have a long shelf life, which is why the company is urging consumers to check their medicines. To date, there are no reports of illness due to taking the recalled products.

St. Joseph School District officials took action in the form of an e-mail. Eileen Duty, coordinator of health services for the school district, informed all district nurses to be aware of the recall and observe if students have the medicines. The district, as well as most day care centers and other schools, do not administer medicine to the children unless authorized by a parent or guardian.

And most businesses in town didn’t have product on their shelves, but a Sam’s Club spokesperson said they had to remove a limited amount of product from shelves of its stores.

“We have pulled products and sent letters to our members informing them of the situation,” she said.

Consumers can find the lot numbers on the bottom of the box containing the liquid product and also on the sticker that surrounds the product bottle.

This is the first I've heard of this, and I'm wondering what the exact issue is with the inactive ingredient that is causing the recall.

I am wondering if this has been going on since Friday why I haven't heard of it before now, but I don't watch news channels very often, I just get my information from the Internet. So, maybe I happened to miss it.

I think that the Tylenol i have lists only an expiration date, and lot number. Here is a list of the complete lot numbers for the recalled material. The lot numbers appear first, and then the product. Here is also a number to call for information regarding the recall. I would think they should offer a solution for reimbursement, either by a coupon, or exchange at a local retailer.

Parents and caregivers who have questions or concerns should contact their child's health care provider or our consumer call center at 1-800-962-5357 (available Monday-Friday 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Eastern Time). Consumers can find the lot numbers on the bottom of the box containing the liquid product and also on the sticker that surrounds the product bottle.
