Northwest's Roach won't forget Omaha

Tuesday, Sept. 15, 2009

Tyler Roach will play Saturday with a chip on his shoulder.
He hasn’t forgotten his feelings in the fall of 2005, as an Elkhorn High School senior playing practically in the shadow of the University of Nebraska-Omaha campus, when his hopes of getting a call from the Mavericks faded.

Griffons’ secondary endures aerial assault

Tuesday, Sept. 15, 2009

Missouri Western football coach Jerry Partridge called it a “stroke of genius,” the way he and his coaching staff prepared the defense for Saturday’s game at Fort Hays State.
Of course, Partridge’s tongue was firmly implanted in his cheek.

Bearcats get penalty problem under control

Monday, Sept. 14, 2009

KANSAS CITY — It was hard-fought, it was well-played and, as always, it was emotional. But the Fall Classic VIII at Arrowhead Stadium on Saturday between Northwest Missouri State and Pittsburg State had another characteristic not often found in games of this magnitude.
It was clean.

An early Fall (Classic)

Thursday, Sept. 10, 2009

The timing is lousy. But the game is huge, just the same.
Not even Chuck Broyles is crazy about the earliest date ever for the Fall Classic at Arrowhead between his Pittsburg State Gorillas and the Northwest Missouri State Bearcats.

Former Missouri quarterback visits Northwest

Tuesday, Sept. 8, 2009

Former University of Missouri quarterback Blaine Dalton recently visited Northwest Missouri State’s campus, but whether the Bearcats will intensely pursue the troubled freshman is another matter entirely.
Northwest coach Mel Tjeerdsma confirmed that Dalton spent some time around the team recently, but he said Dalton has yet to determine his next move.

Northwest, Pittsburg St. work toward extending Arrowhead contract

Tuesday, Sept. 8, 2009

KANSAS CITY — When the coaches and athletic directors of Northwest Missouri State and Pittsburg State got together Tuesday to promote this weekend’s Fall Classic VIII at Arrowhead Stadium, the subject of Fall Classic IX was bound to come up.
Don’t worry, fans. Saturday’s 5 p.m. showdown at Arrhowhead Stadium isn’t likely to be the schools’ last.
The desire to continue this neutral-site series hasn’t abated, even though the process has been delayed because of changes in leadership at both universities and the Kansas City Chiefs.

Northwest faces improved Southwest Baptist team

Thursday, Sept. 3, 2009

The former cellar-dweller of the MIAA may be a more formidable opponent tonight as an independent.

Scouting Report: Northwest vs. Southwest Baptist

Western football already past season-opening win

Tuesday, Sept. 1, 2009

The speed with which Missouri Western’s starting units dispatched Northern State on Thursday in the season opener for both football teams brought about the inevitable questions: Is Missouri Western really that good? Is Northern State really that bad?

Rookie keeper makes impact for Griffon soccer

Monday, Aug. 31, 2009

Jeff Hansen has a big decision to make. After his team lost 3-1 to Newman on Saturday in the Bearcat Classic at Northwest Missouri State, the Missouri Western women’s soccer coach decided Sunday to give freshman Joyce Endicott an opportunity to be in goal.
Endicott responded with a 2-0 shutout as the Griffons evened their record going into the second weekend of the season.

Griffons get some relief in blowout

Saturday, Aug. 29, 2009

Missouri Western hasn’t had this luxury in a long time. The Griffons virtually cleared their bench Thursday night in a 49-14 blowout against Northern State, keeping their starters mostly healthy and rested while taking a good, hard look at their younger players.
“We’ve always let people back in the game and had to play starters in the second half,” coach Jerry Partridge said. “We never have this. (Quarterback) Drew Newhart was out in middle of the second quarter, and (linebacker) Sean Whiters was out in the middle of the second quarter. When you can sit your two leaders on offense and defense, that’s huge.”

Western romps past Northern St.

Friday, Aug. 28, 2009

Quarterback Drew Newhart tied a Missouri Western record with five touchdown passes Thursday night, and he needed less than a half of play to do it.
Newhart, a junior from Cameron, Mo., got strong running from Thomas Hodges and Michael Hill, then went to the air to put the points on the board in a 49-14 romp against Northern State.
Newhart found Adam Clausen, who played in the place of the injured Andrew Mead, for two of the scoring strikes — covering 30 and 14 yards. He connected with David Fowler, Cedric Houston and Ferrell McGhee on the others as the Griffons (1-0) put this one away by halftime.

Western, Northwest set to open season

Thursday, Aug. 27, 2009

There’s something funny about season openers. While they are supposed to tell a coach a lot about what his football team will be like that year, often the scoreboard result bears little resemblance to the final product.
Missouri Western defeated Northern State last season in Aberdeen, S.D., in last year’s season opener, only to go into a midseason funk, falling short of 2008 expectations.

BEARCAT NOTEBOOK: Northwest plans football watch party for Thursday

Tuesday, Aug. 25, 2009

Although their team will be more than 500 miles away, Northwest Missouri State football fans still plan to gather Thursday night to cheer on the Bearcats when they take on the No. 5 Abilene Christian Wildcats in a 7 p.m. season opener.

Northwest departs for Abilene

Tuesday, Aug. 25, 2009

LaRon Council walked toward the waiting bus, carrying his well-used iPod and a fresh six-pack of his favorite sports drink.

Western football ready to start a more normal routine

Monday, Aug. 24, 2009

All the night practices were great for the players and great for their parents. Workouts under the lights also were great for fans, many with children in tow, who watched the Missouri Western football team’s preseason preparations.
Assistant coach Jay Eilers’ wife and son spent time there. So did athletic director Dave Williams and his children.
But with the start of classes Monday, it will be afternoon practices from now on, and head coach Jerry Partridge couldn’t be happier.

Offensive line should be Western's strength

Monday, Aug. 24, 2009

No Roger Allen? No problem.
Even though Missouri Western’s standout lineman of 2008 is now wearing the uniform of the St. Louis Rams, the Griffons and head coach Jerry Partridge believe the offensive line will be one of the team’s strong points this season.
Maybe even better than last season.

New faces provide St. Joseph Christian a lift at their exhibition

Saturday, Aug. 22, 2009

St. Joseph Christian’s Luke Mathes and South Holt’s Toby Prussman didn’t take long to establish themselves as players to watch this season.
And David Welchert made his mark, too, as Christian dominated its three-team 8-man jamboree Friday night.
The teams each had two 18-play offensive series, beginning at their own 15-yard line, and two 18-play defensive series in a round-robin format with no kicking game.

Northwest shifts focus to season opener against Abilene

Thursday, Aug. 20, 2009

MARYVILLE, Mo. — With the season opener at Abilene Christian just a week away, the emphasis at Northwest Missouri State’s preseason football camp has shifted from learning and conditioning to actual game preparation.
“Today (Wednesday) is the first day that we’ll go full-go,” coach Mel Tjeerdsma said of the game preparation for the Wildcats. “Now we make the total transition to scout teams.”

Bearcats kicker injures knee

Friday, Aug. 14, 2009

Joe Schroeder, his right knee wrapped in an elastic bandage, alternatively stood on the sideline and rode a stationary bicycle while his teammates worked out this week. He is hoping that his long-awaited chance to emerge from the shadow of four-year starter Tommy Frevert and be Northwest Missouri State’s No. 1 place-kicker has not been ruined.

Northwest freshmen adjusting to college

Friday, Aug. 14, 2009

MARYVILLE, Mo. — Ahhh, the college life. Sweating in the mid-day sun and trying to decide which is more difficult — hitting your new “textbook” or that 300-pound lineman staring you down from across the line of scrimmage.
Northwest Missouri State’s freshmen football players can look forward to all that, with little more than a Powerball play’s chance of even seeing the field on game day.

Omon positioned well in Buffalo

Thursday, Aug. 13, 2009

Sure, NFL preseason games don’t count for much once they tee it up for the regular season, but the Northwest Missouri State faithful can’t help but bust a few buttons after Sunday night’s showing by running back Xavier Omon in the Buffalo Bills’ preseason opener against the Tennessee Titans.
With a team-high 11 carries for 36 yards (to go with three catches for 25 yards), the former Bearcat and 2008 sixth-round draft pick got the bulk of the load during the second quarter and caught the attention of a few sports scribes and fan site pundits.

Journey into the wild

Saturday, Aug. 8, 2009

It’s a long way from Benton High School to southern Utah, and Jamal Green made sure he took the scenic route.
Mr. Green, a three-sport athlete and 1989 graduate of Benton, completed a 49-day, 725-mile backpacking trip across southern Utah this spring, risking serious injury — perhaps even death — as he took to a new level his lifelong fascination with backpacking through the area’s canyons.
Mr. Green began backpacking in 1981 on a family camping trip through the Grand Canyon area. As an adult, he has tried to take several trips each year, but none have been of this magnitude.

Western, Northwest kick off football practice

Friday, Aug. 7, 2009

Missouri Western’s football squad took advantage of cool evening weather during a three-hour practice that finished under the lights at Spratt Stadium on Thursday. And coach Jerry Partridge liked what he saw on the team’s first preseason workout.
“It was a practice that moved good,” Partridge said.

Coaching stability key in MIAA

Monday, Aug. 3, 2009

KANSAS CITY — Welcome to the MIAA football coaching fraternity, Aaron Vlcko, but don’t expect your new band of brothers to give you a break.
Vlcko became the 21st head football coach in Truman State history when he was promoted from offensive coordinator in March upon the departure of Shannon Currier. He has his work cut out for him, and he knows it.
As the only new head coach in a conference with little coaching turnover, his fellow head coaches may have empathy. But Vlcko can expect little mercy.

Thursday, July 16, 2009

Beatrice Bruins coach Bob Steinkamp announced this week that he is retiring and that the charter MINK League team likely will cease to exist after this season.
Steinkamp has spent 40 years affiliated with Bruins baseball, but said this week he was quitting to spend more time with his family.

Hook powers Mustangs

Wednesday, July 15, 2009

Ryan Hook drove in three runs with a double and a single, and Danny Malone gave the St. Joseph Mustangs a surprising stint in relief in an 8-3 non-league victory against the Junction City Generals on Tuesday night at Phil Welch Stadium.
Hook moved up into a share of the team lead in runs batted in at 27 with his 2-for-4 performance. He is tied with Greg Noble.
Mustangs pitcher Billy Gura struggled from the outset in his second start of the season, walking two and hitting another batter in the first inning en route to a quick 2-0 deficit. The Generals stole four bases in the frame as well.

Mustangs overcome mistakes to survive exhibition

Monday, July 13, 2009

On a night of free admission, the St. Joseph Mustangs gave fans pretty much what they paid for.
But the Mustangs survived their five errors to rack up a sloppy 8-3 victory against the Kansas City MSBL Royals before a crowd of 2,729 on Monday night.
It was a particularly tough night for shortstop Sam Lind, who on a hitless night at the plate muffed each of his first four fielding chances over the first 5 2/3 innings before successfully fielding a grounder.

Coy gives Mustangs walkoff win against Topeka

Friday, July 10, 2009

Johnny Coy stroked an RBI single up the middle to score Greg Noble in the bottom of the 13th inning to give the St. Joseph Mustangs a 10-9 victory over the Topeka Golden Giants on Friday night.

City snags division II softball tourney

Tuesday, July 7, 2009

The city of St. Joseph and Missouri Western State University added a second NCAA national championship event to an already packed 2010 schedule with Monday’s announcement that the NCAA Division II Softball Championships will be held at Heritage Park.
The eight-team championship tournament, featuring the winners of the nation’s eight regionals, will be held May 27-31, barely two months after the community hosts the NCAA Division II Women’s Basketball Elite Eight and two months before the Kansas City Chiefs open their first training camp at Missouri Western.
“I fully expect my staff by mid-August to take vacations, because it’s going to be an extremely busy time for all of us,” Western athletic director Dave Williams said.

MIAA done with expansion for now

Monday, July 6, 2009

There will be no additional expansion in the MIAA for now, and the league’s only non-football-playing member soon will return to conference play.
The MIAA’s Chief Executive Officers Council (CEOC), at a meeting Wednesday, adopted a philosophy of non-expansion, citing 12 members as an ideal number for conference play.

Topeka to host Division II bowl game

Monday, July 6, 2009

The MIAA and Lone Star Conferences will have one fewer team sitting on the sidelines in December thanks to the Topeka school district.
The USD 501 Board of Education voted last week to host a postseason bowl game featuring representatives from the two conferences.

Landi leads Mustangs to win from No. 9 spot in order

Saturday, July 4, 2009

Troy Landi said he needed to thank manager Matt Johnson for shuffling the batting order.
The leadoff hitter all season for Missouri Western found himself batting ninth Saturday night against Beatrice. Landi responded by going 3 for 3, driving in two runs and scoring two more in the St. Joseph Mustangs’ 8-2 victory over the Bruins.

Mustangs survive Sedalia thanks to wild pitch

Thursday, July 2, 2009

Between Ryan Hook’s legs and Sedalia pitcher Aaron Kleekamp’s curveball in the dirt, the St. Joseph Mustangs found a way to win on Thursday night.
Hook scored the game-winning run on a wild pitch with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning as the Mustangs defeated the Bombers 4-3.

St. Joe positioned for playoff push

Tuesday, June 30, 2009

With a league-leading 12-7 MINK League record and the best mark in the North Division going into Tuesday night’s game against Mac-N-Seitz in Kansas City, it’s difficult for Mustangs fans to keep from giving at least some thought to the postseason and the possibilities of a trip to Wichita, Kan., and the National Baseball Congress World Series.

Patient Mustangs walk past Beatrice again

Friday, June 19, 2009

Sometimes you win a game by swinging the bats. On Friday night, the St. Joseph Mustangs can chalk up their 5-3 victory over the Beatrice Bruins to keeping the bat on their shoulders.
Beatrice starter Mike Strong walked two, uncorked a couple of wild pitches, balked once and allowed a double to Rob Lind to spot the Mustangs three unearned runs in the first inning. St. Joseph’s offense and pitching did just enough after that.

Gumm, Studley avoid trouble, hold on to win Highland Classic

Thursday, June 18, 2009

After spotting themselves to a four-stroke lead in the first round, the duo of Teresa Gumm and Alane Studley used consistency on Wednesday to lock down their first Highland Classic golf championship at St. Joseph Country Club.

Mustangs roll on

Thursday, June 11, 2009

When the St. Joseph Mustangs needed some order restored, Ben Baker answered the call.
The Mustangs’ designated hitter, called on as a relief pitcher, hurled 4 1/3 scoreless innings Thursday night in an 9-3 MINK League victory over the Sedalia Bombers.

Mustangs make clutch plays

Thursday, June 11, 2009

Ryan Hook did his alma mater proud on Benton High School Night at Phil Welch Stadium.
The former Cardinals player drove in three runs in a 3-for-4 performance and reliever Ryan Carbah got a game-saving strikeout in the ninth inning as the St. Joseph Mustangs defeated the Mac-N-Seitz Athletics 8-7 Wednesday night.
Hook admitted that he had been uncomfortable and struggling at the plate, but he said he worked hard in the batting cage at Hard Ball Academy earlier Wednesday.

Famous Chicken to appear at Phil Welch Stadium

Thursday, June 4, 2009

What started as a $2-per-hour job that was intended to last one week has hatched into a 35-year career and pop icon status for Ted Giannoulas, otherwise known as the San Diego Chicken.
Giannoulas will have free range of Phil Welch Stadium tonight when the St. Joseph Mustangs take on Chillicothe in their MINK League home opener. That’s many miles and many years since, as a college student, he took the temporary assignment to hand out Easter candy for a San Diego radio station.

Mustangs roll to another easy wins

Saturday, May 30, 2009

The first three games for the St. Joseph Mustangs were supposed to be to figure out who will be the regular starters.
After his two hits and two RBIs in Saturday night’s 10-2 rout of the Omaha Diamond Spirit, Brent Seifert has no worries about his playing time on this team.
“What’s nice about him is that he can play three positions for us — third, center, first, and we can DH him,” manager Matt Johnson said. “He’s a guy we’ve got to keep in the lineup every single day, the way he’s swinging.”

Mustangs open season in emphatic fashion

Friday, May 29, 2009

Uniforms and a full contingent of players to fit into them?
Well, not yet.

Northwest is well represented at NCAA meet

Thursday, May 21, 2009

With its largest contingent since 2003 and a legitimate national title contender at the core, Northwest Missouri State hopes to make some noise this week in the NCAA Division II national track and field championships.
The Bearcats sent seven athletes — five women and two men — to Angelo, Texas, where action begins today for all five of the women.

Bearcat football scrambling to fill home dates

Thursday, May 21, 2009

MARYVILLE, Mo. — A nationally televised game to open the season gives Northwest Missouri State football fans cause for excitement, but the thrills at Bearcat Stadium could be scarce in 2010 because of scheduling quirks.
The Bearcats open 2009 at Abilene Christian in a game to be televised by CBS College Sports, but that game represents the second and final contest in a two-year contract between the two schools.

Central's Love, Bates qualify for sectionals

Saturday, May 16, 2009

KANSAS CITY — Biscuits and gravy are not exactly the breakfast of champions.
But despite the stomach discomfort it caused Central’s Justin Love, it wasn’t exactly the recipe for disaster, either.
The Indians’ senior qualified for next weekend’s sectional meet in both hurdle events Saturday during the Class 4 District 8 Track & Field Meet at Park Hill High School.

Christian's Taff ignores injury, leads Lions to victory

Saturday, May 9, 2009

Alexa Taff’s facial expressions told the story of triumph and perseverance Saturday at the Class 1 District 7 track meet.
A smile creased the St. Joseph Christian freshman’s lips as coach John Chavez whispered her 100-meter dash time to her: 12.71, good enough for a school record.
That same fresh face carried a furrowed brow about an hour later, at the end of her victory in the 400.

Mustangs Notebook: Moon dirt and a chicken will have St. Joseph in common this summer

Friday, May 8, 2009

Moon dirt and a famous chicken seemingly have nothing in common. They will this summer, however, according to the promotion schedule announced by the St. Joseph Mustangs.
