I caught Bill Falkner’s soundbyte on IQ-2 last night with respect to Mayor Kenny’s desire for the whole council to conduct the city manager’s performance review before this council leaves office. I heard Bill say it would probably be best to wait until after the elections and then I heard the sound of a bus rolling over the mayor. Bill is trying desperately to distance himself from hizzoner the kook, but it is too late for that.
How do you like that can tied to your tail now, Bill?
Let us pretend, for just a second, Ken Shearin is not a fraud and a lunatic. Let us ignore the fact that Ken is the worse thing to happen to Saint Joseph politics in 30 years. Even at that, Ken Shearin would still go down as one of the worse mayors in Saint Joseph’s illustrious history. Ken has been waiting patiently for his last month in office to stick the knife in Vince Capell once and for all and yet he STILL cannot close the deal. Ken Shearin has literally accomplished nothing in the last 4 years.
Fortunately for us we can add ineffectual to Ken Shearin’s list of many dubious qualities.
I agree the wisdom of the Fort Smith expenditure is unclear; I can argue both sides of that question. However, since fines from traffic violations are such a very small percent of the city’s revenue stream, I don’t think we have to worry too much about increased petty enforcement.
If you want a clue where the city will cut back, just reread the article. Police and Fire services make up the largest portion of the city’s budget. The city has laid off firemen and closed firehouses before. If the citizens of Saint Joseph won’t pay for public safety services with a public safety tax look for those services to be cut.
Really? I certainly never had “a hate on” on Mark.
Of course, I still think it was bush league for Mark to pose as a “honest reporter” while functioning as Mayor Kenny’s de facto press secretary and semi-official mouthpiece [apparently the NP agreed] and I do remember noting the difference between a sacked newspaperman and a failed politician is a fine line indeed [history proved me right there as well], but I never ever disliked Mark personally. I think you have hurt my feelings.
Sense, for once, I find myself agreeing with you. At least for this year, the parade should be called the Downtown Winter Carnival.
The fact Mr. Weston continues to belabor the party line confirms what I suspected.
It seems clear the Jazz Society leadership, believing absence makes the heart grow fonder, decided to kill the Mardi Gras parade, hoping the various agents and agencies would be more amenable to the CHJS's financial needs in the future. In short, the CHJS decided to play hardball to buy a better deal. Like most shoddy plans, this one went off in their hand.
I think it is likely the DT businessmen will prove capable of pulling off a winter downtown parade, and if they do, that leaves the CHJS out, as in standing on the sidewalk watching.
Really, is seems to me the world has been set right. The folks that stand to gain the most from a winter DT parade are now in charge and the CHJS doesn't have to worry about losing money on a parade that isn't part of their primary mandate. Plus, next year, if they want to, the CHJS can pay $50 like everyone else to march in the parade they abandoned.
PS to the DT businessmen: If I were you, I would be getting my parade permit for Mardi Gras Saturday in 2011 like tomorrow.
The City Council, at their sole discretion after putting the contract out for bid, awards the city’s insurance business, not the City Manager. Are you suggesting Vince’s wife is kicking back to the Council? Sure would like to see your evidence there.
I think your fly on the wall is too deep in the mature to see straight.
On the contrary, as I mentioned above, Mayor Kenny will be delivering his annual "State of the City" address after the regularly scheduled council meeting on February 8, 2010. Really, the only difference this year is the Chamber of Commerce has declined to foot the bill for His Honor's speechification. That means no hotel conference room, no hot coffee or cold drinks, no fruit or danish or croissants, and no comfortable chairs:.all of which obviously cost money. Just Mayor Kenny in the council chamber with a live mike.
Still, it promises to be crazy weird. Bet the over on an inappropriate melt-down.
Then, based on your statement, may I reasonably infer you had a different or contrary experience with the St Joseph Area Chamber of Commerce than the ideas professed by that organization in their Mission Statement?
Go ahead, show me. Point on the doll where the bad old Chamber touched you.

Mardi Gras parade a ‘masquerade’

Slew of changes being reviewed for city charter
