I commend the SJSD, Heartland Health and other local partnerships for tackling the health problems with our youth. I would like the people who think this should be expanded to all grades to think through the manpower it would take to manage this. Right now, the 4th Grade Challenge is championed by Dr. Jane Schwabe from Heartland and staffed mainly by members of Heartland Wellness Connections and other members of the Youth Partnership.
Last year was the first year of the program and it was a huge hit with the kids. This year it's being expanded and hopefully it will continue to expand. But, at some point the rest of the community will have to step up and help Heartland and the Youth Partnership with managing the logistics of this program. Until then, Heartland will continue to get out in the community and help people lead healthier lives.

taxedout, I stand corrected. You are correct, St. Luke's Northland received a 59% and St. Francis Hospital received a 65% which also put them in the Value Index. Heartland earned the highest rating of 72%.
Competition already exists for Heartland in St. Joseph. There are plenty of hospitals within driving distance. Plus, there are many clinics and specialty boutiques in town that cater to the KC hospitals. If Luke's or KU Med wanted to build an ER in town, I think it would great. But, they won't because there is no money in it for them.

mm1967, the ER rooms in KC are just as small as Heartland. Some of them are even smaller.
Did you know that St. Luke's has a cardiovascular clinic on Woodbine? There is a St. Joe Urgent Care clinic on the Belt? There are a number of non-Heartland doctors in town doing great business. Heartland employees hundreds of dcotors from all over the nation from some of the best hospitals you've heard of. How can you say that excellent doctors won't come to town because of Heartland? That's simply not true.
If another hospital wants to move into downtown, they have every right. Please contact all of the KC hospitals and let them know you are interested.
Heartland is not a saint. I do not receive all of my health care at Heartland and I've recommended KC hospitals to family members if I felt that they would get better care there or if they needed a 2nd opinion. This article specifies that Heartland earned a high rating for quality, efficiency and patient satisfaction. Do you really believe that the KC hospitals have no issues that Heartland deals with here? I have received horrible care at Luke's, NKC, etc. and so have my family members, but I don't sit around making blanket statements about how horrible they are to everyone I meet.
NO hospital is perfect, but this article shows that Heartland stands above the area hospitals when it comes to quality, affordability, efficiency and patient satisfaction. No other hospital in KC earned the right to say that.

taxedout, you have every right to your opinion, but this national recognition is based on facts, not opinion. You may have had a bad experience at Heartland, so have I, but that does not negate the excellent quality, affordability, efficiency and patient satisfaction that Heartland provides to this community. This study proves that.
Also, please look at the hospitals that Heartland competes with in KC. They did not earn this rating. Do you really believe that they would magically become a better organization if they were within the city limits of St. Joseph?

Way to go, Heartland! It's always nice to have 3rd-party organizations recognize us for what we do here. :)
I am very excited for Dr. Laney to be here. Welcome to Heartland! I look forward to working with you.

I believe it's important for our whole town to rally around this issue and work together to bring the obesity epidemic under control. Heartland Health supports the community in various ways to promote healthy lives. Our programs transform our community through strategic partnerships that help us spread the message of health and wellness.

Wouldn't it better to wait and hear what the new CEO has planned for Heartland and the St. Joseph community before castigating him as a lost cause? After listening to him speak today, he seems to be a genuine character, highly intelligent and has a great sense of humor. He's passionate about caring for people and believes the needs of the patient come first. Those attributes can achieve greatness whether you have been a CEO or not.

Hey, Ricky, I don't think the return of power created the 1.21 Gigawatts needed to power the Delorean. Meet me at the clock tower once these storms move into the area tonight.
thanks
